My Overall Philosophy Of School Counseling

Self-Assessment Paper One School counseling is unlike many other careers for a multitude of reasons. When I began the education to become a counselor, I understood these classes would help me become better prepared; however, a counselor never really knows what it truly entails until one begins practicing. Within the past three weeks of my pre-practicum, I have become more aware of the different aspects of counseling, and with little practice, I am beginning to feel more confident. I have become more cognizant of my strengths, weaknesses, what I want to provide students and my overall philosophy of counseling. It seems that many individuals go into counseling because they had a great counselor that influenced them. However, in my high school, our school counselor worked part-time and was only at school a few days a week. It was nearly impossible to talk with her about personal issues or discuss college plans. Her lack of work is what motivated me to become a school counselor. I have goals to provide students with the help and proper resources they need to succeed in the future. I also chose to take the school counseling route because I knew I wanted to go into counseling, but I also was aware that I did not like talking with adults or the elderly. These are the abilities of people to perform something, using much mental or physical effort (Cambridge Dictionary, 2022). On the other hand, our weaknesses are things we can improve on.
