There are a variety of theories within crime and psychology, and a multitude can be applied to the never-ending list of infamous serial killers, as well as newly developing ones. Myra Hindley is the most notorious female serial killer in the history of Britain. Her past experiences and actions reveal how she was nurtured into becoming a hardcore killer. I will be covering her from her childhood well into her adulthood, and thus what lead her to pursue her deadly career. Of the many theories that can be applied to killers, I will be applying the theory of psychopathy and the differential-association reinforcement theory. Myra is not an exception to either. Her heinous crimes absolutely categorize her and place her among the worst of the worst. She became known as The Moors Murderer due to where her crimes took place, and was deemed the most infamous female serial killer in Britain for a reason. She had no qualms of committing her murders and assisting her callous lover with his violent demands and expectations. She was groomed by him to fear nothing and everything at the same time. Myra was vulnerable in a sense that she was so corrupted and abused by her lover, that she could not and would not refuse any of his demands. She feared him, but did not fear aiding and going through with his torturous plans for their …show more content…
Much of these symptoms were due to her environment, the people she was surrounded by, and her own cruel intentions. Psychopathy is a criminalistic and psychological theory that was developed by German psychiatrists, and means quite literally, “sick mind.” There are a multitude of symptoms that a person can have to be labeled a psychopath. Myra Hindley presented some of these symptoms throughout the entirety of her life, therefore making it quite easy to deem her as a psychopath. There are two types of psychopathy, primary and secondary (Levenson, Kiehl, & Fitzpatrick, 1995). These two types go hand in hand, sharing similar symptoms. Primary psychopathy includes characteristics such as impulsivity, hostility, aggression and external confidence and low anxiety , whereas secondary psychopathy presents more introverted characteristics, such as high anxiety, moodiness and surliness (APQ: Blackburn & Fawcett, 1999). Myra Hindley presented primary psychopathic characteristics such as a lack of empathy, strong aggression, and confidence when it came to intimidating others. However, once she began seeing Ian Brady, her behavior began to shift and show signs of secondary psychopathy. Her family found her to become more secretive, moody, and submissive (Crime and Investigation, 2015). Myra’s crimes are what make her so interesting and terrifying. Studies and case facts show that Myra did
Annie Jean Easley was born April 23, 1933 to Mary Melvina Hoover and Samuel Bird Easley, in Birmingham Alabama. She was raised, along with her older brother, by a single mom. Annie attended schools in Birmingham and graduated high school valedictorian of her class. Mary Dyer was born in England in 1611. She married William Dyer and went to Massachusetts in 1635. She was a good friend with Anne Hutchinson and shared the same views; they were Quakers. She was the mother of 8 children, two died shortly after birth. Homolka Author: Peter Vronsky Publisher: VP Publication Reviewer: Kehinde Martins | 2015 After the phenomenal accomplishment of his true-crime history hit, Serial Killers: The Method and Mandness of Monsters (Berkley Books - Penguin Group, 2004.) The spin-off Female Serial Killers: How and Why Women Become Monsters was distributed by Berkley Penguin in 2007, Vronsky chose to collaborate with a fruitful distributer, RJ Parker to impart stunning Canadian true crime cases to world booklovers. Harriet Ann Jacobs is the first Afro-American female writer to publish the detailed autobiography about the slavery, freedom and family ties. Jacobs used the pseudonym Linda Brent to keep the identity in secret. In the narrative, Jacobs appears as a strong and independent woman, who is not afraid to fight for her rights. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl was published in 1961, but was unveiled almost 10 years later due to the different slave narrative structure. Frequently, the slave narratives were written by men where they fight against the slavery through literacy by showing their education.
(66). The criminal is aware that he murdered someone, yet shows no remorse. A person who is criminally insane does not understand the effects and consequences of their actions, and therefore cannot take responsibility for them. The murderer also hides his wrongdoings from the police. If he were criminally insane, he would not have to lie about his actions.
What You Do In the Dark Shall Come to Light “Nobody’s ever been arrested for a murder; they have only ever been arrested for not planning it properly”(Hayes) There has always been murders out there but it is the unintelligent ones who get caught. Rather it is a baby farmer who is rumored to have killed over 400 children, a man who decided to control women and bending them to his own sadistic desires, or a woman who rapes, mutilates, and kills girls with her husband. Not all the skeletons in Britain’s closet are as well known as Jack the Ripper but they are just as cruel and unusual serial killers, such as Amelia Dyer, and the couple Fred and Rosemary West .
During the 18th century, one of the most notorious serial killers was a woman named Amelia Dyer. Till this day she’s known as “Angel Maker”, the worst serial killer that Britain has ever had. Within a span of 20 to 30 years, she killed about 400 babies. No one was sure why she did it, but when she was asked one day, she said “After I got a baby something seemed to say in my ear, “get rid of it””. Amelia Dyer was born in 1837, and as a child, her life wasn’t that great.
When you think of the typical serial killer, you imagine Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer. Remarkably people only think of male serial killers, yet female serial killers are on the rise and are just as dangerous. There may not be as prevalent female serial killers as there are male though their crimes are just as brutal. The female serial killer is an interesting type that many researchers do not know much about. There have only been recent studies done due to the limited pool of contestants but Aileen Wuornos allowed researchers to delve into the mind of the female serial killer and what makes them tick.
Abstract Multiple studies have shown clear distinctions between the brains of serial killers and the average human brain. Deformations in main complexes like the amygdala, hippocampus, frontal lobe and prefrontal cortex may offer explanations for serial killers actions. These parts of the brain regulate and express emotions, control impulses, and establish right from wrong. When the complexes are altered or damaged they won’t be able to function properly leading to bad judgment and violence, such as homicide.
Hannibal Lecter was a sociopath and a cannibalistic serial killer. A sociopath, also known as antisocial personality disorder, is a person who shows no remorse or sympathy towards others, they disregard moral or legal standards, impulsive behavior, they are manipulative and cunning, and egocentric. Although, many of these qualities are associated with the definition of a psychopath, a sociopath acquires this disorder over time due to his or her social-culture influences unlike the psychopath who is genetically wired with this horrific illness. In the movies prior to Silence of the Lambs it is believed the onset of his disgusting flesh eating obsession was caused by the act of German soldiers invading his home during World War II, where they murdered his parents and devoured his younger sister. This background information and these proper definition’s allow us to recognize Silence of the Lambs’ biggest flaw, the moment when Dr. Chilton labels Hannibal Lecter as a psychopath.
William Hirstein with Horse 's personality: First, psychopaths are uncaring about the other 's feelings and have shallow emotions. That does correlate with Horse, who does not respond to the boy 's worries in the story. Overconfidence and selfishness are two more aspects of psychopathy that Horse has throughout the work, as he is really sure he 's not going to get caught and he ends up leaving Rice and the boy alone just so he can save him from going to prison. As an addition, coldness is another thing attributed to psychopaths and Horse as well - the way he talks about the death of his beloved bunny when he was a child is really cruel. But the most important fact about psychopaths is violence.
Some biologists assume genetic disorders or hormone imbalances cause psychopathic tendencies in people. An example of a genetic disorder is the XYY disorder. This is when a male is born with two Y-chromosomes; with the addition of an extra chromosome the male is prone to exhibit aggressive tendencies. This is something that the male is born with, but causes them to have violent outbursts that they cannot always control.
