Imperialism occurs when a stronger nation takes over a weaker nation or region.
In this essay I’m going to be talking about the negative effects of imperialism and why imperialism occurred. I will explain why the US had the need for the Monroe doctrine, Panama Canal, and Roosevelt Corollary. Also, I will briefly talk about how and why Cuba broke away from Spain.
The negative effects of imperialism in Latin America began in the late 1400s. Harsh wars caused many deaths in the indigenous culture. European powers had control over the influence of the region. The religious efforts aimed to convert as many people to Christianity as possible.

The Monroe Doctrine was written because the US was worried that European powers would try to take over land from the Western Hemisphere. President Monroe made four points when he founded the Monroe Doctrine. Firstly stating that the United States would not get involved with international wars between European powers. Secondly the United States wouldn't engage with existing colonies in the western hemisphere. Third, most of the Western Hemisphere was closed to future colonization. Finally if European powers were to try to take control over any nation in the western hemisphere, it would be viewed as hostile.
The Panama Canal is one of the world's most significant engineering accomplishments. The Panama Canal changed history because it opened up one of the biggest trade ports in the world. The route between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The Panama Canal took about ten years to build between 1904 and 1914, costing around $380 million. It is 51 miles between the canals; it takes about 8 to 10 hours to travel by boat.
Roosevelt Corollary is a foreign policy declaration by president Theodore Roosevelt in 1804. This document stated that if Latin American countries did anything of wrongdoing to the western hemisphere they could intervene with that
