Is the feminist movement going in a good or bad direction? Is the feminist agenda about equal rights for all women and all persons? These are questions that should be pondered as the movement continues to gain momentum and as our society starts to change around it.
In an article titled the “New Oxymoron: Socially Conservative Feminism” (McCarver) it starts to answer the question, what is true feminism? With the country’s current election having a woman running for the highest office in the land you would think all woman would be happy that they have come so far, but that is not the case. In 2008 Sarah Palin was on the ticket as the Vice Presidential candidate with John McCain, this was not the first time a woman was on the ballot but a lot

So why was Palin’s nomination not a cause for celebration? McCarver speaks about there being two kinds of feminists; liberal and conservative. During the 2008 Election there are two liberal examples showing the divide among woman. Gloria Steinem writing an article for the LA times titled “Wrong Woman, Wrong Message” (Steinem) but contrarily Tammy Bruce from the N.O.W. organization endorsed Palin (McCarver). Both known liberal feminists but disagree on Palin. McCarver asks the million dollar question “What do women want?” (McCarver) To answer that question all women’s options must be taken into consideration with the complexity of their different backgrounds and beliefs leading them in, what they believe is best for the feminist movement. In this attempt to seek out common ground amongst woman there is a cause and effect that is starting to show amongst boys and men.
The term “backslide” has been used by Marano to describe the effects of feminism on boys and men. His Psychology Today

So, what is wrong with the patriarchy? Is it because men are at the head? In the poignantly titled book, “Is There Anything Good About Men: How Cultures Flourish by Exploiting Men” Braumeister states, “…The one-sided conventional view had its roots in the feminist critique of society as patriarchy…a conspiracy by men to exploit woman.” (Baumeister) If early feminists felt like there were problems with the patriarchy, how far should the pendulum go before woman are happy? Marano mentions that woman are “Moving towards androgynous roles while men, especially less educated ones, still feel it is a danger to deviate from masculine norms.” (Estroff Marano) He also mentions a study of elementary school boys are resisting regular male socialization. But why? If you put boys together is it surprising when they fight or jump off of things? Could this resistance to regular male socialization be forced upon through new parenting styles trying to change a male’s natural being? Marano states that men who marry, and have a family are more successful in education and jobs. But how can that still be the case when men are no longer the sole bread winners? Is that still the case if their wife makes more money than they do? Even if it does encourage men to live a better life, Marano quotes men in their 20’s and 30’s; ” Men of my age are pulled from all
Amelia Earhart Feminism is a huge problem in the world that still is existent to this day. Whether it’s from insulting someone and calling them a girl or comparing one’s skills at something to a girl’s skill at that thing. Many people have taken a stand against this problem. Because of those people it isn’t as bad as it was back in the 18 – 1900s. Amelia Earhart is a perfect example of someone who has taken a stand against feminism.
Many presumed that Sarah Palin was inexperienced in a political sense to be running for such a notorious office position. Notwithstanding the controversy’s Sarah Palin portrayed herself as a strong women and she did make her presence known. Despite being a broadcasted figure Sarah has not under gone much scrutiny than Hillary has; only because she has not been in the public eye too long. Unlike Clinton, Sarah is an active conservative and gun enthusiast. Sarah and her family are passionate wildlife hunters and keen religious people.
Sarah Palin played a controversial role in American history. There are very different opinions about her role in the political life in America. Some people think she is very intelligent women with great leadership quality. On the other side some people believe she was “clown” or had high celebrity drive. In spite those opinions Sarah Palin had played a tremendous role in women being involved in the American politics.
John McCain, Republican nominee for president, introduced Sarah Palin as his vice president pick at a campaign rally in Dayton, Ohio. Sarah stated that she is “just your average hockey mom,” and would be the first female vice president. Although they lost the election, Sarah’s voice still has been heard. She has written many books. Some of her books include: ‘Going Rouge,’ ‘Sweet Freedom,’ ‘America by Heart,’ and ‘Good Tidings and Great Joy.’
The Production of Masculine Privilege Through Patriarchy and Hegemonic Masculinity The invisible privilege, power and oppression of hegemonic masculinity or masculinities across societies continue to maintain gender inequalities (Kimmel, 2010). Cornell and Messerschmidt (2005) first identified hegemonic masculinity to describe how specific traits, such as white, middle-class and heterosexual, are the valued norms and identities in Western society. Hegemonic masculinity is a form of hegemony that allows men, including subordinate men as a group, to gain more power, control and resources than women (Connell & Messerschmidt, 2005). Masculinised privilege is invisibly ubiquitous in that women and subordinate men construct identities and gender
Therefore, the progression of feminism is only halfway complete because the masculine role is in need of reform. Without an evaluation of the male gender role there is “. . .confusion between maleness and the human norm has limited men from understanding their experiences specifically as men (Gross 20)”. Before feminism, men had rights and power over women. Today while the movement is intact, women are asserting this “masculinity” just as men are, so the movement is currently a fight for power rather than purging both genders from
“This has meant that generally the analysis of men and masculinities has been subordinate to the overarching themes of female oppression and female liberation” (Horrocks, 9).So looking for masculine gender may seem odd at first because it seems that masculinity has an obvious meaning and men are the ones who are in power. Todd W. Reeser in his Masculinities in Theory states, “Masculinity seems like an obvious thing, something we can and do take for granted. We know what it is when we see it: it is commonsensical, produced by testosterone or by nature” (1).It has been decades that women and feminists are the ones who talked about gender damaged and inequalities all over the centuries as a weaker gender and look for gender equality. “Gender equality means that males and females have equal opportunities to realize their full human potential and can contribute to and benefit from economic, social, cultural and political development”(Jasmani,61). But recently having masculine gender can be harmful as well for men because both genders are active in society, politics, etc and men are not the only ruler; it is not really a promotion to have a masculine identity anymore.
Feminism: Viewing feminism from all aspects From the following classic definition of a “feminist” by believing the idea of equality, there is an added responsibility of delivering the idea, convincing people, and helping people realize the occurrence of feminism. Being a feminist by any means is not an easy task. As the idea of feminism is rapidly developing across the globe, it refers to various questions, misconceptions, and sometimes extreme detestation directed towards the feminists. Society still doesn’t understand the essence of feminism, and the true meaning of it. Some believe that a feminist fight for women's equality, while others believe that women should be able to fulfill their highest potential.
History of the feminist movement The feminist movement, or simply feminism, is a name given to designate movements and ideologies which are intent on achieving equal rights for women and men. While feminists around the world have undertaken diverse measures and have set themselves different goals, varying from one country to another and changing through time, most Western feminist theorists agree that all the movements aimed at the improvement of women's condition should be classified as feminist, whether or not they refer this term to themselves (Walters 2005). Although many researchers, including the authors of A Feminist Reader, Sharon M. Harris and Linda K. Hughes, claim that the origins of the feminist movement could be observed as early
The first wave of feminism has been a revolutionary social movement in terms of that it could lead to an overcoming of the previous social order (Newman, 2012 p. 487) through its social agents and create, through this, a new social ordering of time and space. Moreover, through reaching their previously described aims, the first wave of feminism has been able to literally “overthrow the entire system itself, (…) in order to replace it with another one.” (Skocpol, 1979, as cited in Newman 2012, p. 487). Thereby, one can even state that a new ordering of time and space by which routines and routinised behaviour has been challenged as well as changed took place. The interactions influenced the way how societies work today.
Feminist issues have always been controversial throughout history and gender topics remain debatable matters in the context of the democratic society of the 21st century. Social, political and economic inequality between men and women are still important issues for the contemporary world. Women’s rights concerning motherhood or abortion, domestic violence within the family, the right to equal pay or sexual discrimination and harassment are all issues that are frequently debated in the society of our century. The first point to be made , when discussing feminist issues is the fact that the concept of gender is usually defined in terms of social performance.
Tyson writes that patriarchy is “sexist, which promotes the belief that women are innately inferior to men” (85). Although feminist don’t deny the biological differences, Tyson inserts, they do not agree that “physical, size, shape, and body chemistry make men naturally superior to women” (86). Tyson states that feminists argue mostly about the traditional gender roles that link to patriarchy casting “men as rational, strong, protective, and decisive” and “women as emotional (irrational), weak, nurturing, and submissive” (85). The patriarchal concept of femininity is linked “to frailty, modesty, and timidity” that “disempowers women in the real world” according to Tyson (88). A patriarchal woman is “a woman who has internalized the norms and the values of patriarchy” (85).
Introduction Hook: Since the beginning of time, the existence of women and men has been undeniably considered as one of the integral factors that forms our society as it is today. Despite their parallel existence and contribution to the growth of the society, it was considered that women were not treated equal to men both in domestic and working circumstances, leading to a wave of movements demanding equal rights for women, known as feminism. Despite its success in claiming benefits for mistreated women in the past, recent feminism actions and point of views have gone above their original purpose, and created negative impacts and false mindset as its consequences, 2. Credibility I have done some in-depth research about this matter to prepare for the speech, and I myself do not stand for contemporary feminist. 3.
The feminist movement has made many ground breaking accomplishments over the years however has it truly gone to the root of the problem. Pollitt states that, “The feminist movement ……… has hardly turned America into a playground free of sex roles.” Claiming in her article about how the feminist movement will be unsuccessful till people are able to fully practice gender equally from infancy. If people started to take what Pollute said to practice the overall beneficial effects would cause, there to be less gender inequality. There would be less discrimination because as it is now man still get paid more and are favored more over women in high level positions.
Sometimes feminism is interpreted like “a creature with many faces”. There are liberal feminists, socialists, the radicals .. the list continues. The major issues we confront today , were fought by previous women in last two waves. Continuously, they work to vanquish distinction between men and women in all spheres of life (Dorey-Stein, 2015).
