Odysseus is a hero Do you ever find yourself questioning if someone is a hero or not, well Odysseus is one to discuss. Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey was originally written in the 8th century and was first published in english in 1614. In the poem, Odysseus goes through many challenges to help his men. Near the end, Odysseus finds himself in a predicament but perseveres. Although some may argue that Odysseus is not a hero, he should be treated as one due to his leadership and cleverness. Throughout the story, leadership was expressed as a trait for Odysseus. Odysseus showed the characteristics of a leader when he “Carved a massive cake of beeswax into bits and rolled them into my hands until they softened. Going forward I carried wax along the line, and laid it thick on their ears” (Homer 395). This quote shows that Odysseus cared about his men and was a leader by making every one of his men beeswax to put in their ears so they didn’t hear the sirens singing. Showing leadership is an amazing characteristic to have. Odysseus really showed his side …show more content…
They would argue that he is cocky and doesn’t think before he acts. “Far out, as far off shore as shouted words would carry, I sent a few back to the adversary: ‘O Cyclops! Would you feast on my companions? Puny , am I, in a caveman’s hands’” (Homer 383)? While that may be true that Odysseus doesn’t think before he acts or speaks, this doesn’t necessarily mean that he isn’t heroic. “Odysseus and his crew set out for the land of the dead. They arrive and find the place to which Circe has directed them” (Homer 388). There are many upsides to Odysseus’ mistakes. He has always been there for his men and was the bigger person when it came to tough situations. Although people might say Odysseus isn’t a hero, people beg to differ. He has had so many heroic activities he has conquered and he has been smart about all of his adventures he’s
I believe Odysseus is not a hero because he let many people die. He also didn't save his men from the Cyclops “He couldn't save his people.” I personally think that he didn’t try to save them at all. Odysseus did not save his people in time. According to Homer, “ While he fought only to save his life, to bring his shipmates home.
This passage shows Odysseus as a true leader for he does not hesitate, does not even think twice, about putting himself in harm's way for his crew. He is clearly portrayed as someone who cares deeply, and is selfless when it comes to those who are close to him. Odysseus is ever loyal to his crew and would never leave them to fend for themselves. Because of this, Odysseus has proven himself to be a selfless and loyal
Throughout the stories in Homer’s, The Odyssey, Odysseus shows characteristics of a poor leader but sometimes lets us see moments where he is a good. In the stories Odysseus is faced with situations that show his true colors. Most of the time Odysseus is very brave and loyal to his crew mates. On the other hand at times he can show a lack of trust in his crew and let his pride outweigh his brain. He shows loyalty by never leaving any members of his crew behind.
Even though some people may argue that Odysseus is not a hero, I maintain that he is a hero because he tried to save his men using bravery and courage,
For example, Odysseus showed great leadership when he was planning what to do with the suitors with his son, Telemachus, when he said, “Here is your part: at break of day tomorrow home with you, fo mingle with our princes”(Homer 599). Odysseus helped get his life and his family back. Also, the leadership by Odysseus helped get penelope back and also helped him and his son kill all the suitors. For instance, Odysseus also showed good leadership when he said, “Therefore you are to tie me up, tight as a splint, erect along the mast, and if I shout and beg to be united, take more turns of the rope to muffle me”(Homer 581). When Odysseus’s men were with the
While we see many displays of character from Odysseus, the one that stands out to me in this book is his intelligence and thoughtfulness. Before Odysseus left Circe, she advised him about the sirens they would travel by. Instead of keeping this information to himself, he shares it with his crew so they can navigate past them in the best way possible and so that they know what they are up against. He says to them, “Friends… it’s wrong for only one or two to know the revelations that lovely Circe made to me alone. I’ll tell you all, so we can die with our eyes wide open now or escape our fate and certain death together”
In Homer’s translation of The Odyssey, the epic sung many years ago, there is a struggle of warriors to return to their home land after the battle of Troy. They face many challenges and obstacles and generally rely on one person to lead them home, Odysseus. He is seen flawless by men and the smartest of them all. A leader must always carry qualities that make him such a person to be followed by many dozen men who enjoy his control. Although Odysseus was seen as a strong leader with no flaws, there were in fact many that have cost him many lives.
Dwight Eisenhower once said, "The supreme quality of leadership is integrity." Odysseus displayed a lack of integrity and poor leadership by not fully communicating all the facts of the situation
I believe that Odysseus is a strong leader, due to the choices and fates he chooses in the story. When Odysseus and his men were stuck in the Cyclops 's cave, Odysseus had to come up with a plan to help the men escape. Due to his bravery, he managed to stab the Cyclops in the eye and free his men from the island. Even though he could have died in the process, he would sacrifice himself for his shipmates to escape. Another example of Odysseus being a great leader, was when he and his men had to travel to the Underworld to find out how to get home.
When Odysseus commands his men to go back to sea to voyage, he is a good leader because he is telling his men what to do. He is being a leader by protecting his men from the Ciccone 's army by leaving before reinforcements come. For example, when Odysseus and his men are heading to the sirens Odysseus states “you are to tie me up, tight as a splint” (Homer 1005). Odysseus is an admirable leader when he orders his men to tie him up and do not untie him because he is sacrificing himself for the good of his men. He is a leader when he does this because he lets his men not suffer the sirens while he has to.
This is not a heroic trait because not all of the suitors were bad and wanted to destroy his kingdom, so he shouldn’t of had killed all of them. In conclusion, Odysseus had many flaws that could stop him from being a
This shows Odysseus being a great leader. Another time Odysseus is resourceful is when he saved his men from the siren sounds by plugging their ears with wax. Odysseus showed good leadership because he was protective and prevented the bad sirens from hurting his mens during the trip. This is a good example of Odysseus’s leadership skills. Odysseus proves he is a hero due to his resourcefulness.
Being a leader is a complex role that is easy to mess up. Time and time again he endangers his crew up until their demise. Constantly Odysseus is shown to be brash and controlled via his emotions in moments of danger. Even after he begins to lose more and more men he continues to be insanely unremorseful. In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is overall an overrated leader with his biggest flaw being his horrible judgment
In The Odyssey by Homer, Homer makes Odysseus look like a hero, but his actions show that he is not. I do not believe that Odysseus deserves the title of a hero because his flaws kill his men, he cheats on Penelope, and he lies and spies on Penelope. When Odysseus and his men meet the cyclops, Odysseus decides to stay at the cyclops’ cave and see what he has to offer, even though his men think they should just steal all the cyclops’ food and run away. Since Odysseus made his decision to stay, his men were eaten by the cyclops.
Odysseus displays a strong act of leadership by doing whatever it takes to get done. Whether it's fighting Sirens or a cyclops Odysseus does whatever he could to get his men past the obstacle. In the text it states “I carried wax along the line and laid it in their ears.” (Homer 12.
