This article discusses how badly the corrections officers treat the inmates at Mid-State Correctional Facility in New York. The inmates are beaten and penetrated by foreign objects by the officers that are supposed protect them. Not only are they mistreating the inmates but they are getting away with it as well. The Dougherty County Jail is 1,230 bed state of art pre-trial detention facility that is under supervision and operation of Dougherty County Sheriff. In addition to pre-trial inmates, the facility houses State, City, and a small number of other inmates for other area law enforcement agencies. The jail facility is unique in that it has two on-site courtrooms that host a variety of court proceedings seven days each week. The jail maintains a high-level of safety and security utilizing current and nationally accepted detention management practices. The jail utilizes inmate labor under the supervision of contracted food services specialists to prepare approximately 3,500 meals daily.
When I arrived on shift we were advised during pass on that inmate Ellery, Danielle Jean (A-13367) was upset due to multiple inmates being showered out and placed in her cell (Cell 1). Her along with inmate Roskey, Skylar Lynne (A-14203) antagonized and bullied both inmate Knight and Robertson until they were at their breaking point. It got to the point where inmate Belanger tried to intervene and got in a heated argument with Roskey, which almost boiled over turning into a physical altercation between the two. Not only do these new recruits receive only a limited amount of training, but they are also taught to use force when it comes to the inmates misbehaving or disrespecting a guard (Bauer, 2016). During training, it was recommended that Bauer and his fellow recruits do not attempt to break up a fight between inmates because it would be too dangerous considering they will not be carrying pepper spray or a nightstick. On April 21st, 1930, Ohio State Penitentiary, which was built in Ohio’s capital, Columbus, in 1834, caught fire and killed hundreds of inmates. When returning for the night, they discovered that a fire was started within cell blocks G and H. It was only after the fire had been doused, that everyone had realized that the scaffolding, on the outside walls of those cell blocks, was what had caught fire. At the time, the prison was known for its poor conditions. The prison was only meant to hold 1,500 people, but at the time of the fire, it was housing 4,300 inmates. As of September 2011, California incarcerated close to 144,000 inmates in its state prisons. This number fell in recent years owing to the pressure from SCOTUS and California policy changes. In 2006, California had a peak incarceration rate of 172,000 inmates (Rogan, 2012).
