On a typical school day, students sit through 7-8 hours of nonsensical busywork before they can even leave the building. Most high schools in America have a strictly structured day planned out for their students. To begin the day, students sit in class for a few hours. Then they are exposed to some of the worst food known to man, cafeteria food. Not to mention that once they are done scarfing down the sodium-rich garbage called food, the students have to sit in class for a few more hours before their freedom is regained. The entire day is composed of students being herded in masses to and from classrooms and eating the awful food. America needs to rethink how high schools work, and the best way to start is to allow open-campus lunches. Allowing students to leave campus and purchase their own food gives the students the freedom to make choices. This is a freedom every American has and is the basis of capitalism. Plain and simple, cafeteria food is disgusting. On top of that, the food that is served is over priced and served cold or overcooked. Somedays, when things are worse than normal in the cafeteria, the food is overcooked and left out to become cold. As …show more content…

This could slowly transition students off cafeteria food and not shock them with a wave of options. Eventually, maybe after years of only being able to eat outside or in the cafeteria, schools could allow students to be bused off campus once or twice a week with strict rules of behavior and tardiness. Once students are adjusted to the choice of being able to ride a bus to local businesses, let them drive themselves. Yes, this is a scary thing to say to some teachers and administrators, but students will be conditioned after the previous years of weaning the responsibilities onto the students.
