A spate of similar attacks had occurred within the Melville area recently. With the State government issuing $250 000 towards the Melville council for more CCTV cameras to be installed along Oxford St.
Though these funds were provided to the council 12 months ago, minimal effect has taken place. Only 4 of the proposed 9 cameras have been installed with none of them being operational.
The council accepted the funding in March 2015. However a project proposal was not provided to the Department of Justice’s Community Crime Prevention Unit until November of the same year.
When asked for a comment, Victorian Police Minister Kristi stated ‘Melville Council have stalled, delayed and procrastinated rather than getting on with installing these cameras’.
Coming to the governments defense, he finishes with ‘The State Government is doing everything we can to improve safety on the streets for all Victorians’.
The City of Melbourne has installed seven new CCTV cameras in just under three months since the beginning of the

They have helped with better documenting the moments people interact with officers and this creates a better environment for both officers and the

With recent disputes regarding defunding the police, it leaves what is truly necessary up for debate. Police departments can only afford to do so much with the amount of government funding they get. The equipment is exponentially expensive when it comes to supplying every officer with a body camera. The costs not only include the device itself, but the ongoing maintenance and video footage and recorded data that is collected (Kissiah, 2022). With frequently changing technological advancements, the prices continue to rise.
The first murder involved a 17-year-old male and his 16-year-old girlfriend who were shot dead near their car at a secluded location on Lake Herman port. The police could not establish the motive of these initial killings or a suspect to the murders. The second incident involved the shootings of a woman aged 22 and her boyfriend who was aged 19 who were sitting in a car that was parked in a remote location similar to the first incident. A man with a flashlight who fired several shots at them attacked the two killing the man and seriously wounding the woman. After the shooting, a man called the police, gave the location of the crime, and claimed responsibility for the attack and the previous attack.
Another advantage to implementing police body cameras is that it would lower lawsuit costs from expedited resolutions of complaints and lawsuits. It may seem small but a footage from a body camera provides a judge with truthful evidence of what transpired throughout the incident. Frivolous complaints towards a police officer cost a large amount of money in terms of jury verdicts and out-of-court settlements (Ramirez). So to cut the time spent arguing a case involving an officer would be cut down with the demonstration of a video type. But to go even further, any idle complaints could be forgotten if the videotape shows that the officer’s actions are justified within the incident.
N.p., n.d. Web. 09 Nov. 2015).This solution will solve the problem because it would make the police more aware of what the officers are doing while on duty. Traditional policing practices struggle to effectively serve increasingly multicultural communities where cultures, religions and competing national identities challenge social norms, particularly when policies are unable to engage with diversity or overcome organisational biases and prejudices (Ben-Porat, 2008; Larsen, 2010). As a result police relations with immigrant communities are often strained and any form of contact is usually negative. There are three key challenges for policing multicultural communities; recruitment and training, practices and community involvement (Larsen, 2010; Murphy & Cherney, 2011). A study conducted by Murphy & Cherney (2011) found that ethnic minority groups held less favourable perceptions of police compared
