As I find myself waking up at 1:10 in the morning, wondering the real meaning of this virus. The only though that could come to mind was to research information on it. I came across this movie called, "The Normal Heart". This movie wasn’t like anything I've ever seen, normally several movies that would introduce the virus would avoid any true facts about it. Even though there are lots of movies, books, and documentaries I only received fact from this movie. What really started this, where did it come into existence, is it a Zoonosis, is this virus man-made? There it was the outbreak. In the mid 70's - early 80's, scientist began to experiment on the virus, giving every gay man a blood test. The testing …show more content…
Patient Zero was a French - Canadian flight attendant named, Gaetan Dugas. He was known as that because; he infected over 2,500 people in just North America. "Dugas was stated to be a charming, handsome athlete who was very sexual according to his own estimation, averaging hundreds of sex partners a year. He had claimed to have over 2,500 sexual partners across North America since becoming active in 1972. An over view of genetic analysis of the HIV virus gives us some support for the "Patient Zero" theory. Dugas is now believed to be part of a mix of homosexual men who traveled a lot, were extremely sexually active, and died of AIDS. However, a number of people have said that Patient Zero of Dugas as being responsible for bringing HIV to cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco. People In the patient zero studies, said the average length of time between sexual contact and the onset of symptoms was 10.5 months. During this time of the study nobody knew that the average length of time between initial infection and AIDS is ten years", said journalist Jane Kelly. Aids have been reported to be a zoonosis. (A zoonotic disease is a disease that can be passed between animals and humans. Zoonotic diseases can be caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi). However, this theory has never been proved. Several arguments show that HIV-AIDs are not a zoonosis. Read this link, the link said man-made. HIV- AIDs is a man-made disease. Some people said the virus came from monkeys but, that was a
John Moore was diagnosed with hairy-cell leukemia, a deadly cancer that filled his spleen with malignant cells. Moore had surgery to remove his spleen, and signed a consent form allowing his doctor, David Golde, to dispose of any severed tissue. Moore still kept in contact with Dr. Golde to get treatment, but without his awareness, Golde began collecting tissues and blood cells so he could market them to other doctors. Looking back at the book, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”, it says, “They [Moore’s cells] also carried a rare virus called HTLV, a distant cousin of the HIV virus, which researchers helped to use create a vaccine that could stop the AIDS epidemic. ”(Skloot 202)
As well as Preston’s point of view that AIDS also must be taken under considerations because the AIDS symptoms progress slowly, onset of the disease usually occurs in adulthood, and it might be asymptomatic that can be as lethal as the Ebola
In the article “Accessing Treatments: Managing the AIDS Epidemic in Ontario in Knowledge, Experience& Ruling Relations” by George W. Smith, the author pointed out how the ideology and social construction of common knowledge about AIDS influence the treatment for those patients negatively. Smith believed the general public and government have been lack of sufficient knowledge about AIDS, the AIDS patients and the government, the organization who providing the treatment are disconnected. There are still lots of people think AIDS is fatal illness disease and mainly caused by homosexuality. Smith thinks the lack of treatment for AIDS is basically due to the homophobia, labeling and prejudices formed by the public and mass media, and the government

In “Out of the Wild,” the author uses definition to define of Marburg . The author used definition to help the reader understand what Marburg is and what it can do to the human body. The author describes Marburg as a zoonotic and a RNA virus, which infects bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals and which is transmitted from animals to humans. The author provides a useful definition on Marburg, which helps the reader understand the article more because without knowing what Marburg is the article would not make sense to the average reader. In “The Deadliest Virus,” the author also uses definition to help the readers truly understand what H5N1 is and the affect it can have on the world.
Here, the virus was called Ebola Zaire and the virus spread faster here because the doctors were not using clean needles when treating patients. Once the world noticed what was happening, doctors from all over the world travelled there to try to find a cure. Later on, with the help of the samples of dead boy, Doctor Johnson figured out it was the Marburg Virus. Johnson then discovered that the boy and Monet had both explored the same caves. So, it was determined that the original virus came from the caves, but they could not find the exact source within the caves.
Writer and best-selling author, Richard Preston, in his non-fiction thriller, The Hot Zone: A Terrifying True Story, tells about the origins and incidents involving major filoviruses, such as Ebola and Marburg. Preston highlights multiple cases of the people who dealt and came with close contact to the viruses, from the possible contraction of Marburg by Monet, to Nurse Mayinga’s case of Ebola Zaire, to the biohazard operation at the Ebola-infested monkey house in Reston. Through this, he influences the public’s view on the viruses with an informative, but dramatized tone. Although the depictions strike convincing fear into many hearts, there are inaccuracies that blur the true reality of Ebola, especially with its symptoms and method of transmission.
This stigma touches on homosexuality. At that time Magic Johnson had contracted the disease as well and was thought of as gay or bisexual. The stigma then was that HIV/AIDS was contracted through sex between men and not simply blood transfusions, which were equally probable. “The story received an enormous amount of media attention”(Study). Another fact is political.
The AIDS epidemic began in the 1980’s and the effects of it were seen all around the globe. Each country led their own unique approach to preventing and curing AIDS, and some strategies worked better than others. The Australian response to AIDS can be considered world leading due to their multifaceted approach against the disease. Australia was successful in educating all people while simultaneously researching ways to cure the disease. Australia made a concerted effort to fight the both the physical disease itself, as well as the social stigma associated with it.
In 2014, four cases of Ebola broke out in the United states and over 900 in North West Africa. Of these four cases, only one was fatal. In The Hot Zone, Preston describes the three main filoviruses: Marburg, Ebola Sudan, and Ebola Zaire. Marburg, is often referred to as the cousin of Ebola and is not as fatal as the Ebola virus. Of the two different Ebola strains, Ebola Zaire (named after its origin) is known as the most deadly of all the viruses with an eighty percent fatality rate, and is twice as lethal as Ebola Sudan.
In the 1980’s the Aids epidemic broke out(Aids
“[AIDS] is not a distant threat. It is a present danger.” It is important to recognize, focus and take immediate action in regards to AIDS to create a safer and more positive future. On August 19, during the 1992 Republican National Convention Address, Mary Fisher, the author of “A Whisper of AIDS,” stood in front of a huge crowd of audience, delivered an influential speech to raise awareness for the treacherous transmittable disease known as AIDS, and called America to take action. She first starts her speech with a request for the audience’s attention and respect.
As Joey was tinkering with his magic cannon inside his room, one of his friends suddenly pushed open his door and shouted. “James, and his wife are inside the city! The Undying James is here!” Joey had an evil grin on his face, he had been training and preparing for this day.
AIDS CONSPIRACY Most people today believe that HIV and AIDS originated in Africa ("Acquired immune deficiency syndrome: biological, medical, social, and legal issues”). However, no one really knows where the virus originated from. Thousands of conspiracy theories are mixed everyday making shocking claims about anything. Examining the first cases, the first outbreak, and many other important factors in the history of AIDS, many different possibilities have been proposed regarding the origin of the disease (“The Politics of Conspiracy Theories”). Some people believe that it was the U.S. Government who created aids.
An example of this in the film is proven when Miller visits his doctor after he was in casual contact with Beckett, knowing that Beckett is HIV-positive. Miller assumed he could contract the virus through airborne particles settling on his clothes. Miller’s physician had to explain to him that HIV can only be transmitted through bodily fluids such as blood, semen, and vaginal secretions. Another example of an inaccurate interpretation of how HIV is spread in the film is the scene when Wheeler stated to the partners that“ Andy brought AIDS to our office.” AIDS is a syndrome: a collection of multiple symptoms that are acquired from Human Immunodeficiency virus.
