ONCE UPON A TIME……………...As children, when those magical words are spoken to us, we begin to REMEMBER and unknowingly reconnect with the truth about ourselves deep within our souls *(For a summary of Coelho’s The Alchemist, go to the appendix at the end of this book.) This truth is that here on Earth each of us is a dream; a dream waiting to become a reality. Every child has some kind of unconscious sense of this mystery buried within his/her own heart. The fact is that, whether we know it or not, none of us can live without our own highly individual Once Upon a Time. ONCE UPON A TIME in 1987 a little-known Brazilian writer and dreamer called Paulo Coelho decided to honour his inner child, and so began to write his own personal fairy tale. It became the fable known to millions as THE ALCHEMIST. Paulo based his story on an ancient allegorical tale he had read in the centuries-old book The Arabian Nights.* Decades earlier, the famous Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges, whom Coelho had read avidly as a young man, also found inspiration in the same story and created his own version called A TALE OF TWO DREAMERS. THE ALCHEMIST made its …show more content…
Millions of people around the world are devoted and unconditional fans of the fable, and one unintended consequence of that overwhelming love for the story is that its author has unwittingly been cast in the role of a new-age ‘guru’ and spiritual sage. However, after twenty eight years in print, and with more than 65 million copies of THE ALCHEMIST sold - giving it an almost mythical status in world literature - over a period of nineteen long years I discovered that no one, and I suspect NOT EVEN PAULO COELHO HIMSELF, could understand or explain the extraordinary success and appeal of his
It triggered thoughts that were longing in my mind. Although, the book was different than I thought, it was even better. I immediately fell in love with its philosophical aspect of the world, teaching me about the value of treasures and the passion it takes to finds them. A couple of quotes deeply engraved into my heart, the first one was said to Santiago, it stated: “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it,” (Coelho 43). This quote proved to me that fate always works in your favor, and that compassion being put into something, is only multiplied in order to make it happen.
In the novel The Alchemist written by Paulo Cohelo is about Santiago and his quest to discover a treasure. This novel carries multiple strong themes of love. Santiago falls in love romantically with two characters: the merchant’s daughter, who remains unnamed, and Fatima. These characters follow the archetypes that enhance how the author, Paulo Cohelo, views love and its importance. In the Alchemist, Paulo Coelho explores the lover archetype to illustrate that love is something that is so strong it can change your perspective on life.
1. In the prologue, the alchemist reads a version if the story of the death of Narcissus that has a somewhat different ending from the traditional telling, one that emphasizes the grief of the lake into which Narcissus will no longer be looking at his reflection. In beginning the book with this story, what themes and relationships is Coelho telling us to watch for throughout Santiago’s story? Do you think there may be an element of “narcissism” in the pursuit of one’s personal legend?
Because of the alchemist telling him this, he knows his Personal Legend and continues to work for it. Out of the many challenges people face in life, some still just give up instead of persevering. The Alchemist, however, shows that people should never give up, but instead fight through bad situations to complete their goals. Others may think we are just suffering when we persevere, but “no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity” (Coelho 134).
This novel at first seemed to me to be rather “sketchy” and lacking believable truth. I thought that this story would be like Beauty and the Beast or Sleeping Beauty, a type of fairy tale story with no real truth. I found out soon that I was wrong. The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel is not your regular, fairies and trolls, kind of fairytale. This novel is the nightmare that most fairytale’s ignore; there is no happily ever after.

I felt my future brightening and I started living with hopes. The alchemist sayings on achieving one’s dream stayed in my head fresh. “(…) when we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too” (pg. 150). Dear Diary, I spent the past few days lying in bed and thinking about my pursuit towards my dream.
When reading The Alchemist, it amazed me how much I could identify with the book. A quote from the book I really related to was, “He had to choose between something he had become accustomed to and something he wanted to have,” (Coelho 30) I wanted to be happy, I wanted

Santiago strived to find his personal legend with the help of people he met on the way to find treasure that he is destined to find , just to realize the treasure was where he had fallen asleep in the beginning of the book.
Personal Essay: How The Alchemist Changed My Life Forever As most people in Los Angeles are today, I was sharing an apartment with another roommate at a rent of $1,800 a month and commuting along the busy and noisy 405 to work everyday - two hours each direction, surrounded by traffic and angry people honking out of frustration. As I headed out for work every day and came back home after a long day, I eventually became more and more miserable as time passed - I stopped spending any valuable time with friends and family as I became bitter and sour spending most days and nights at a job that demanded more and more of me, I spent less time doing the things I used to enjoy like hiking or reading as I was worn out

The 1988 book The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is one of most renowned books in the literary world and incorporates a number of different themes with which many readers can identify. As found within the novel, the quote, “The simple things are also the most extraordinary things, and only the wise can see them,” encompasses one of these topics of interest. First, one must realize that this quote revolves around the idea of perspective and the process by which one can find meaning beyond the obvious. What is “simple” to one person can be something entirely different, or “extraordinary” to another. The differentiation between the two concepts can be sought out through a person’s experiences and internal thought mechanisms, otherwise known as wisdom.
Paulo Coelho was born on the 24th of August in 1947 to two devout Catholics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. By an early age, they had enrolled him in a Jesuit school system in hopes of him aspiring to one day be a priest. Wanting to be a writer, Coelho told his parents of his dream, and as a result, they committed him to an asylum at the age of 17. He endured electroconvulsive treatment, which is shock treatment, to adjust his “rebellious” ways (“The Alchemist-Paulo Coelho Biography” 1). When he left the asylum for the last time, which would be his third time, he enrolled in law school, and dropped out soon after (“Paulo Coelho Biography” 1).
