Grit is a term that gets thrown around alot; but rarely do people take time to think about what grit is and how it can help in everyday life. In Charlie Portis's True Grit, Rooster is portrayed as the grittiest character in the book for several reasons. First, he is known for being fearless; next, his relentlessness; and finally, his strength of character.
Rooster Cogburn's fearlessness in the face of danger is a crucial element of his character in the novel "True Grit" by Charles Portis. The Oxford Dictionary defines fearlessness as the "lack of fear" that is just skimming the surface of what it means and takes to be fearless. When diving deep into what it means to be fearless, you understand that just doing things without thinking of the

He is showing the strength of character–an essential part of grit. One of the traits that help define grit is someone's strength of character. Throughout the novel, Rooster character development has come along ways and by the end it is one of the many factors that make him the grittiest character. In the beginning of the book, Rooster is portrayed as a marshall that will get the job and has no feelings. When Mattie asks about the marshals and the officer tells her about Rooster he says that Rooster is a "pitiless" man. But Rooster grows fond of Mattie and starts to become protective of her. The first we see of this protectiveness is when Labeouf whips Mattie, and Rooster interferes by pointing his gun at Labeouf and ordering him to stop. Labeouf refuses to saying "I am going ahead with what I started,." Rooster pulls his gun on Labeouf and says, "it will be the biggest mistake you ever made, you Texas brush-popper." The significance of this quote is that the Rooster shows here that just because he will do what needs to be done, he will not stand for harm to Mattie. Another time when Rooster shows his strength of character is when, without thinking about it, he tries to save Mattie when she is in the pit. This shows how courageous Rooster is and that he is willing to put his own life at risk to save someone
Angela Duckworth, an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania, defined grit, in her article "Angela Duckworth and the Research on Grit", as "sticking
“Mr. Rooster Cogburn… They tell me you are a man with true grit.” Are the words of Mattie Ross to Rooster Cogburn who supposedly has true grit according to the sheriff who told Mattie about him. What does it mean? Was Mattie looking for the right thing?
In Mattie’s world the meaning of true grit is to have a lot of courage. I feel everybody except Tom Chaney has some form of true grit. For example Rooster Cogburn showed true grit because he charged against seven armed riders with two pistols on a horse by himself. However Mama has true grit because she is battling death back at home. The reason Tom Chaney has no true grit is because he is a coward.
One way he shows grit and determination is when he had to hide in the rafters with his friends and mom. He had to hide in the rafters to escape the Nazi authorities. He was out playing with his friends Yossel and Samuel when they heard something wrong. He didn’t want to get caught and killed, so he hid with Yossel, Samuel, and his mom. A quote that shows this is, “We laid still for a long, long time.”
Throughout True Grit by Charles Portis, LaBoeuf possessed many character traits, such as arrogance, disheveled, short-tempered, and greedy. LaBoeuf was viewed as an arrogant person, specifically by Mattie. For instance, everyone was taken away when he walked towards the dinner table, “His grin and his confident manner cowed everybody” (Portis 71). Laboeuf also looked very disheveled when Mattie met him. When she met him the first night, she thought, “he needed a bath and a shave” along with some rest as he also looked tired (71).
True Grit is greatly influenced by the law and order on the Western Frontier during the 1800s especially in the areas of Arkansa and the Indian Territory which is, current day Oklahoma. During this time, the crime in the area was great due to the fact that, criminals would commit crimes and then, escape to the lawless Indian Territory. Most importantly, in the border of Arkansa and the Indian Territory was Fort Smith which was “considered” the last “bastion of law and order”. Additionally, everything across that in the Indian Territory became the cases of the federal law. Unfortunately, the federal court in Fort Smith had to cover a large area with only one judge to handle all the cases.
In the preface of Grit, Duckworth explains that “what we eventually accomplish may depend more on our passion and perseverance than our innate talent” (Preface). She goes on further to explain that talent is severely overrated and that “Grit is a common denominator of high achievers across very different fields” (Duckworth 3). Jim Carrey is a remarkable example of the power of grit and determination. According to, Carrey had a vision to become a successful actor and comedian, but he went through many trials. Despite being dyslexic and struggling at school which led him to ultimately having to drop out at 15, he worked hard and never gave up on his dreams (Abhinandhinee).
Grit is sticking with your future, day in and day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years” (Duckworth). This quote explains what grit is. Grit is the determination you have to complete a goal that you have had for a long time. Grit is knowing what you want your future to be so you work hard to get there. Grit is simply living out your dreams.
At this point, Mattie definition of grit has changed from having courage, being fearful, being double tough, to her recent definition of being compassionate, caring, and a savior. But other qualities remained the same like the stable traits of determination and
Rooster demonstrates his character again a little later in the book when Laboeuf is hitting Mattie with the branch over and over again for coming along when they specifically said not to. Rooster intervenes saying “Put your switch away Laboeuf ... Put that switch down, Laboeuf!... It will be the biggest mistake you ever made, you Texas brush-popper”(110-111).
