The current issues that I choose to discuss is performance-enhancement drugs, performance-enhancement technologies, and cognitive enhancements by athletes. Many athletes choose to take performance-enhancing substances in order to bulk up muscle and build strength, but the use of performance enhancement substances is becoming more frequent in athletes in order to increase cognitive enhancement. Well known athletes, such as Barry Bonds, Marion Jones, Maria Sharapova, and Lance Armstrong has admitted to using performance enhancement substances. Many sport organizations inspect performance enhancements as wrong and unfair.
Drugs such as Ritalin and Adderall are not permitted for athletes to use. Ritalin and Adderall are prescribed for people who have ADHD and even healthy people use it to improve school and work performance. Critics of the drugs Ritalin and Adderall say that the drugs are addictive and dangerous. Supporters of the use of Ritalin and Adderall argue that the drugs can give someone an advantage in highly competitive fields. The conflict involves liberty and negative consequences. In terms of liberty,

I want to focus on one specific issue. Should athletes be able to use performance-enhancement drugs? I do not believe that athletes should be able to use any type of non-over the counter drug. To simplify that more, I believe that drugs such as Ibuprofen, Advil, antibiotics, etc. are perfectly fine for athletes to use. I understand that athletes are going to have sore muscles and will need to use these minor drugs to help their pain. Drugs like Adderall and Ritalin I don 't agree with athletes using. Those specific drugs are meant to stable the mind and make you concentrate and focus more. I think a person who isn 't an athlete and has a problem where they need those drugs is acceptable to use. But I think when competing in a competition, everyone should be in their right state of mind and fully cognitive without drugs like Adderall and Ritalin in
Throughout the article written by Leigh Cowart she describes how Performance enhancing drugs are not only bad for the sports themselves, but also very harmful to the players that use them. The author uses many arguments including how athletes already push their body to the limits, so intaking an outside substance will tear the body down rather than build it up. Cowart also denies the thought that Steroids make sports an even playing field by stating that they will only help the strong and make the weak weaker. In the article Leigh Cowart uses strong tone to help her get the point across that drugs do not benefit the athletes in any way.
Steroids are the common enhancer to use because it brings results fast. The effects can be worse than the results. Drug abuse can be life threatening. Athletes need to think about their future, such as family, friends, and their own life. Athletes have been using drugss for many years and will keep using for many more.
Drugs are a big issue in the sports industry. Many athletes will take performance-enhancing drugs, such as steroids, to help them play better. These types of drugs should not be allowed because it gives the player a greater advantage over other players who are playing with their natural ability. This issue could be solved if there was monthly drug testing and if the drug was not so easy to get ahold of. Many major league baseball players are getting caught using performance-enhancing drugs.
The use of performance-enhancing drugs, or PED’s, in sports has been a significant cause of athlete ridicule over the past several years in the United States of America and throughout the world. PED’s are considered a banned substance in nearly every athletic competition that is regulated at the highest level. In America, the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), and Major League Baseball (MLB) are the largest professional sports companies, all of which have PED’s as a banned substance. Further, the players face significant fines, suspensions, and other penalties if they abuse the respective PED policies for each league. In this paper I will discover the history of PED use in sports, the side effects and uses,
Performance-enhancing drugs otherwise known as PEDs are drugs that are commonly used by athletes to enhance their level of play. Performance-enhancing drugs have been around a long time, and were initially introduced in 776 BC - 393 BC. The Ancient Greeks used PEDs during the original Olympic Games in order to have an advantage against their opponents. They were used on and off throughout the years, and became prominent again during the 1900’s where they were used in the modern day Olympics from 1904 - 1920. “Mixtures of strychnine, heroin, cocaine, and caffeine were used widely by athletes and each coach or team developed its own unique secret formulae” (Gold).
Despite the compelling stories that come along with athletes and their usage of performance-enhancing drugs, it is important to ensure that performance-enhancing drugs stay far away from sports. It is key to protect the livelihoods of athletes as well as that of the sporting industry. Therefore, athletes should
This article is written by Dr. David R. Mottram, B.Pharm., Ph.D., F.R.Pharm. S. who is an Emeritus Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Liverpool John Moores University in Liverpool, UK. This article tackles multiple subjects on the topic of performance enhancing drugs. Firstly, it tackles the many reasons why athletes would use performance enhancing drugs. It dives deep separating the use of PEDs by athletes to several categories from therapeutic use to treat medical conditions to recreational use to most important of all performance enhancing use.
Introduction: One of the largest industries in the United States is the professional sports industry; it brought in $63 billion in 2015 1. Professional athletes are seen as strong and talented, but how much of their strength and talent is achieved naturally? Performance-enhancing drugs have been increasingly used in professional sports and are prohibited from being used, but should they be prohibited?
In conclusion, Performance Enhancing Drugs should not be tolerated in any sport, whether professional or amatuer. These drugs are highly dangerous and even lethal to all athletes who use them. It is also unfair to athletes who choose not to use these drugs, as they are performing on their hard work and talent and not relying on an “edge” to help them reach their goals. These drugs are highly addictive, just like any other street drug or alcohol and can be fatal in many cases.
Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) have been used in sports for many years. The common term for it is doping. It is one of the most important issues among professional athletes today. Doping should not be allowed in professional sports. The use of performance-enhancing drugs creates a disadvantage for the athletes that don't use PEDs since they will not perform as well as the athletes that used the drugs during the game or competition.
Performance enhancing drug use is increasing muscle strength, body size, and the healing rate. It allows fans to see the maximum potential of the athletes. However (transitions) it is not fair to the athletes that don 't use steroids. Steroids are not any different than other drugs: they are addicting. (compound)
She found that Olympic athletes, in general, believed that most successful athletes were using banned substances.¨ There will be no reason to play the sport anymore if people cheat.thomas ¨H. Murray, PhD, President of the Hastings Center, in the chapter¨ "Sports Enhancement" ¨published in the 2008-2009 From Birth to Death and Bench to Clinic: The Hastings Center
“Performance-enhancing drugs absolutely give athletes advantages in strength and endurance, which helps them both in the preparation for their sport as well as the actual implementation of the skills needed in many ways for the different sports.” (Argintar) Anything that can make an athlete better in an unfair way that can not be done by all athletes should not be allowed, especially something this harmful. Anything that is not worked for and earned should not be given in the form of a pill. This also lessens the actual wonder of an amazing athlete that is not doping, because due to the amount of people doping today we just tend to assume they are using something they should not be using to be that athletic or
AS91101 - 2.4 Writing Portfolio Piece Two - Cooper Title: Drugs in sports Drugs have become an integral part of any modern day sporting event. Drugs give an unfair advantage to the user and the competitors that are using enhancements are not using their own full abilities to win the Olympic medal or championship. This makes it unfair to other competitors that are not using a drug or other enhancements to compete. Athletes like Lance Armstrong and Nadzeya Ostapchuk not only give sportsmen and women a bad reputation but influence the way the public think about sports and run the risk of addiction and long-term health issues.
Biomedical enhancement is a budding industry and, as it develops, will likely produce many difficult moral, and ethical questions. The first important question to answer is whether or not biomedical enhancements would corrupt sports? I think the clear answer is yes, they would. They attack the integrity of the game.
