“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt said. Paulo Coelho and Gus Van Santo portray two important characters in the novel The Alchemist and the movie Finding Forrester Santiago and Jamal and William show strong qualities throughout their whole journey to pursue their personal legends. In order to make your dream a reality, you must be persistent and optimistic. Santiago’s persistence and determination was a key factor in his ability to achieve his personal legend. In The Alchemist, Santiago is persistent throughout his whole journey to achieve his personal legend. To add on, the Merchant said, “You dream about your sheep and the pyramids, but you're different from me, because you want to realize your dreams.”(Coelho pg 12) The merchant was trying to teach Santiago that it's important for him to go for his dreams and he realizes that Santiago has the potential do something with his dream and to make his dream come true which is different than most people. In addition to being persistent, it positively impacts your ability to achieve your personal legend when you're optimistic and patient. In the movie, Finding Forrester the main character Jamal, with the help of his friend William Forrester over time, realizes his personal legend as a writer. William Forrester said to Jamal, “No thinking - that comes later. You must write your first draft with your heart. You rewrite with your head. The first key to writing is... to write, not to think!” He continuously encouraged Jamal to flow with his words and not to think specifically about what he was writing so his writing would come from his heart not from his mind.
