I am alone and cold. My ragged patched sleeping bag does not keep me dry when it rains. The only thing left that I have is my father’s brown leather coat, embroidered with his initials in red J.S.N - Jeremy Stanley Noel – the coat my mother would use to cover my eyes with whenever my father would become abusive towards her. Although, they are both gone now. My mother passed away and my father disappeared. I guess I could say I inherited that same trait as my father; running away. The dark dinghy dumpsters down the bland colourless alleyway became my home now. The streets of Chicago became my home now. Living homeless, was a handful – of garbage. I would keep the alleyway “clean” and I would scare off anyone that was messing about in my lane. …show more content…
I had the view of garbage underneath the large green smelly dumpster. I wanted to cry, I thought to myself ‘could this get any worse?’ I lay in that position for a while. Soon my eye caught something- underneath, was a clear rectangle package – it was untouched and inside was a white digital watch. The watched looked brand new as if someone had specifically placed it under there for me. This was awesome. I knew I could sell the watch to guy at the watch stand. I could earn some money to buy myself food and water. I ran down to the watch stand guy as fast as I could. It was around 8.30pm, the watch stand guy was closing up. “HEY! HEY! HEY!” I pleaded desperately while running towards the stand. Out of breathing and my nose dripped with rain, I said, “How much would you like for this watch?” “Hmm… I’ll buy off you for twenty dollars” The man made long eye contact with me. Then out of the blue, he asked me if I would like to work for him, he told me that he could do with someone sorting the magazines out and tidying up around his stand. He told me that he had saw me cleaning up around my alleyway and knew that I would be useful to the stand. I could not say no to this, this was something I could not refuse. I knew I could earn some money, save up and rent an apartment. All these ambitious thoughts were racing around my head, I instantly told him I would be honoured to help him out. I looked at him surreally, my bold blue eyes covered in …show more content…
He cleaned me up and paid for me to stay in a hotel. Although I kept my father’s leather coat on at all times while working with him, I told him that it was the only thing that I had left of my father. Stand and I started work at 8 am sharp every morning, although this one morning Stan was late. Time soon flew on and I began to set up the watch stand. Suddenly this man in a black business suit appeared and asked “Are you, Mr. John Noel?” “Yes”…I said in a confused voice. “I have a letter for you”, the man gave a white letter that had a gold sticker holding the envelope together. I opened the letter in front of the man, the handwriting was in blue italics and so I began to read – “Dear John, Six months ago, I was diagnosed with a tumour in my brain. I have been receiving treatment, however, it was unable to save me. If you have received this letter, just know that I am gone and wish you the best in
The sun beat down on me with intently when I stepped out onto the sidewalk. Quickly I found shelter from the heat on a nearby bench surrounded by shade. However before I took a seat I removed my Desmond Merrion suit jacket, took off the silk Ralph Lauren’s Black label necktie and stuffed it into the pocked of the suit jacket. I unbuttoned the top two buttons of my Charles Tyrwhitt shirt and then did a neat three flip roll of the sleeves. And without given it to much thought I removed my Rolex and placed it into my pants pocket.
Loss, obliteration, longing and transcience constitute the recurring theme of Marilynne Robinson's Housekeeping. It gives it's readers a feeling very similar to the kind that the lake in the book gives to the residents of Fingerbone: it is the kind of existence whose mundane presence can be easily overlooked but has so much sunken at the bottom that it builds itself up to become a part of people's everyday life, as a reminder, an alarm, a time bomb -- in the sense that it carries memories, reflections and truths which are sober enough to be
He waited in line as the clerk rang up the items of the person in front of him. Adam could feel beads of sweat pool above his brow. Was he sure he wanted to do this? The man in front of him had an assortment of items. All of which, Adam had never tried.
The clock on the dash glowed 6:45, p.m., when my phone started to sing Patsy Cline’s ‘Crazy’. Chief Ladell’s number light up the screen when I fished the Samsung out of my jacket pocket. They say crime is down in Jacksonville. But you couldn’t prove it by me.
Even though it was very late and he was nodding off while reading his book, he was so thrilled to hear a knock on his door. Most people would ignore it, but he was so lonesome that he was ecstatic at the idea of
The wind was blowing, the birds were chirping and the trees were dancing in the cool autumn breeze. for anyone else that seems like a ideal, but for me that day was miserable I had allergies and it was the height of allergy season and I had just made the unwise decision of jumping into a pile of leaves. But, my miserable predicament is not the reason that I’m writing this story. The reason that I’m writing this story is to tell you about my relationship with the place that I have been living in for the last nine and half years.
Although I "knew" in my heart it was coming, the call from the Lobby at my office asking to see me was a blow. Cathryn and Cliff had been dating for about five years. The last few years he had even come to our annual family beach week. He was a welcome addition to the family vacation, not just because of the fun personality and my boys having another "brother", but because we had someone to take the picture that we use every year for our Holiday cards.
I visited had an open casing of shoes. If death had a smell it would be the wall of shoes. I’ll never fail to remember the different size shoes and the aroma burning my nose. Shoes never have made such an impact on me, the dress shoes of a possible business man, little fainted pink strapped shoes of somebody’s daughter. Every pair of shoes represents a victim and every victim
