Senior Fall Pathways Portfolio
High school my year of success, potential and goals. For the past four years of high school, they have not been what I expected because I expected something more challenging and difficult to graduate. I also expected to experience things such as involvement in school activities. To not be categorized as your level of our understanding because that meant the high level students couldn’t really have a connection with the low improvement students. For example I’m not that high of a performing student but I would 've loved to work with one that was to develop their skills. When the anticipated senior year finally begins, a typical student at Laurel High School enjoys a brief honeymoon of peer dominance and the illusion that the finish line is in sight. Then, reality sets in. College and scholarship applications burden an already hefty load of work so that by December, much like poor little Max the dog in Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch, seniors feel they are dragging forty times their weight up a steep, snowy mountain. I saw an opportunity several years ago to take advantage of their misery by assigning a document I knew most would need to write anyway, the dreaded personal essay. It makes perfect sense: it fits the Common Core standards, and they need the help.

My fall walk started on a bright, and sunny day. The birds were chirping and flying through the sky. The wind was blowing the red, yellow and orange leaves off the branches of the trees. Walking through the grass, I heard the sound of dry leaves crunching under my feet. My neighbors had different fall decorations in their yard.

My journey consisted of many good and bad times, and throughout the years I discovered my strengths and weaknesses. I made new friends, took on different tests, accomplished many things. My first year was my most difficult, being new to the school, but as the years went by, school became a more fun experience for me. Knowing that the 4 years of high school was a journey for me, I was able to brace myself for the difficult times to come and the rewards I was going to receive. At the end of the journey, I had gained a lot from these 4 years, but it also prepared me for my next journey, my journey through university.

The members played a big part in this personal growth of mine, as well. I was shocked when random community members would come up to me to congratulate me on a win or ask how the teams are looking. It was important for me to be assured that they care about the things I was doing. These small conversations felt like an invitation for me to start and hold meaningful conversations with adults. Some of the greatest lessons that I have taken from high school are lessons that have nothing to do with the curriculum.
After reviewing my Future Me letter, it was encouraging to see how much I grew in general. From my work in essays and responses and how I felt mentally from where I was when I wrote this letter. I have felt a growth in these past few months. I came into the semester unsure of my critical thinking and unable to get deeper into the subject feeling like I hit a wall with my chisel that is dull and unable to chip away the wall. After the feedback from Cynthia for my responses and essays, I have more confidence in skills as I convinced myself that I was a better storyteller than an essay writer.
