Personal Statement: A Career As A Nurse

Voices talk over the intercom. The smell of iodoform disinfectant is in the air. Hospital beds are rolled down the hall. Doctors and nurses walk past each other, each with their own tasks and to-do lists, wearing scrubs. Of course what I think of the work environment of a nurse is more complex than the basic stereotypes I see when I go to the doctor, or what I see on Grey’s Anatomy. I know what I think of nursing now is merely a small fraction of what I could ever expect to experience in the rewarding career of being a nurse, but it is that curiosity and passion that will aid me in research, internships, and one day, a job in a hospital.
In school, I have taken as many opportunities as I can to take classes that would benefit me over the years, such as Medical Microbiology, Mental Health, AP …show more content…

Being a nurse is more than having four years of knowledge in sciences, though. You have to be able to work under fast paced environments, while keeping a level-headed mind, and educate patients and their families of options given all information provided. These are all qualities that have come to me naturally, and some I never noticed until others pointed it out. Although at first glance it may seem unrelated, Bed Bath & Beyond was one of the busiest environments I have had to work in, especially during back-to-college season and the holidays. Personally, I prefer this type of environment because it keeps me productive. When I would be done down stocking, I would head to the register to keep the lines down, then back to asking customers if I could help them find anything. I am always willing to help out and never stand around and wait,
