Sixty years ago the United States was stuck in a state of inequality and turmoil. Streets all over America were filled with people fighting for the rights they were denied for hundreds of years. Today we can see a similar sight throughout the streets of America. Now, instead of racial rights the fight is equality for same-sex couples. Same sex-couples should be able to live in a nation where their natural rights are protected. Although it has been argued that members of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community should not be granted certain rights, they do not deserve to keep suffering discrimination because everyone should be allowed their natural civil rights. Additionally, a few months ago the LGBT community won a huge battle, same-sex marriage is now legal all over the United States. It was the news many LGBT community members had been waiting for. Yet, some places and states are still very reluctant to follow this law that was ruled by the Supreme Court. It has been shown in numerous states where there are cases of people still refusing to give licenses to same-sex couples. In some places scattered across the United States discrimination towards jobs just for being homosexual is still a possibility. People try hard to hide their personal lives in fear of being fired or denied a job due to their lifestyle. Although there are laws in place to protect people’s rights when it comes to job interview processes, employers can easily find ways around it. This makes denying someone the job based on their lifestyle not that hard of a process. This is similar to what African Americans went through years ago in the United Sates. While women have the right to vote, they are still harassed and discriminated against. The rights to their own bodies are still given and taken away by men. Similarly, while people are allowed to be openly gay without being immediately put in jail, they are still bullied and murdered for their sexual identity. With this law, individuals can not be treated based on their sexuality, however, there is still a chance that they may experience harassment or discrimination within the workforce/place. Safety and Security There is sill a huge issue about keeping individuals in the GLBTI community away from emotional or physical violence. As a result of their sexual orientation, there is a high number of violence towards gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex communities. They are still involved in hate-crimes whether is verbal abuse, or threatening emails/texts/messages.

As of now, discrimination of a certain race being higher than another, is not the only problem. LGBT people around the U.S. are being harassed, discriminated, and freedoms and rights are being taken away. A person’s sexual orientation can force them to not eat at a particular restaurant, adopt a child, or even buy a simple wedding cake.

The LGBT community has faced numerous disadvantages since the beginning of time. Until recently, gay marriage was illegal in the United States due to the idea that these kinds of relationships were unethical and negative for society. Because of this idea, gay and lesbian relationships have a negative stigma that comes with them. In our nation’s past, there was a time that LGBT people and relationships were unheard of, this has gradually changed over the course of time however it has been a long process.
