Should bans be placed on dogs because of their breed? What exactly is BSL? “Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) is the blanket term for laws that either regulate or ban certain breed of dogs in an effort to decrease dog attacks on humans and other animals (Breed Specific Legislation 1). It also refers to regulations such as muzzling, insurance, and a host of other strict requirements placed only owners of specific breeds of dogs (Bless the bullys 1) One might ask how is banned breeds determined? Banned breeds are determined by appearance. Behavior and temper of the dog does not matter, a dog is just labeled dangerous ,aggressive, vicious ,and a danger to the public only because of their breed or the appearance of the dog. Majority of pit bull attacks are not from family dogs. Pit bulls were bred as working dogs and family companions prior to being bred to bull bait and then dogfight (A brief history 1).The supposedly troublesome characteristics of the pit-bull type—its gameness, its determination, its insensitivity to pain—are chiefly directed toward other dogs. Pit bulls were not bred to fight humans. On the contrary: a dog that went after spectators, or its handler, or the trainer, or any of the other people involved in making a dogfighting dog a good dogfighter was usually put down. (The rule in the pit-bull world was “Man-eaters die.”) (Gladwell 4) now because of their reputation that they are a “fighting” breed trained to latch onto the neck of another dog with the ability to lock their jaw on the opponent's neck and not release until it has killed the other dog, their ears are often cut to make them look vicious they are beat to become tough and mean they are taught to attack and when they don't fight they are used as bait for a dog willing to fight. whats going to be done about small dog attacks that go unreported are bans and restrictions being put in place for small dog breeds what is going to be done to fix the problem of dog aggression and attacks in large dogs instead of banning a breed why not work to correct the problems in the breed. punish owners for mistreatment of animals. A dog has no voice they are just as much of a victim as the person bitten. the public needs to be informed about dogs and their ability to cause serious harm and even death things need to be done to prevent these attacks owners should be provided resources on how to deal with an aggressive or territorial dog before a tragedy happens owners need to be educated on signs of aggression and what to do if their acts out in a aggressive manner. What is being done to prevent over breeding and dog fighting. A lot of dog owners have that have aggression problems and the owners just don't know how to handle the problem this doesn't mean their a bad owner somedogs just have problems just like people and in some cases no matter how well you train and raise your dog some just become very aggressive as well as with age a sweet loving and kind may become distant or easily agitated when bothered. Pain and stress in dogs can cause them to act with aggression as well as when startled or uncomfortable. it has to be understood that animals don't think as people
