Should bans be placed on dogs because of their breed? What exactly is BSL? “Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) is the blanket term for laws that either regulate or ban certain breed of dogs in an effort to decrease dog attacks on humans and other animals (Breed Specific Legislation 1). It also refers to regulations such as muzzling, insurance, and a host of other strict requirements placed only owners of specific breeds of dogs (Bless the bullys 1) One might ask how is banned breeds determined? Banned breeds are determined by appearance. Behavior and temper of the dog does not matter, a dog is just labeled dangerous ,aggressive, vicious ,and a danger to the public only because of their breed or the appearance of the dog. Majority of pit bull attacks are not from family dogs. Pit bulls were bred as working dogs and family companions prior to being bred to bull bait and then dogfight (A brief history 1).The supposedly troublesome characteristics of the pit-bull type—its gameness, its determination, its insensitivity to pain—are chiefly directed toward other dogs. Pit bulls were not bred to fight humans. On the contrary: a dog that went after spectators, or its handler, or the trainer, or any of the other people involved in making a dogfighting dog a good dogfighter was usually put down. (The rule in the pit-bull world was “Man-eaters die.”) (Gladwell 4) now because of their reputation that they are a “fighting” breed trained to latch onto the neck of another dog with the ability to lock their jaw on the opponent's neck and not release until it has killed the other dog, their ears are often cut to make them look vicious they are beat to become tough and mean they are taught to attack and when they don't fight they are used as bait for a dog willing to fight. See not every pittbull will fight no matter how willing they are to please their owner and in this case they are used as bait dogs or killed because they are of no value to the “owner”. the breed if discriminated for what people turned them into “fighting dogs” and that's all that matters to people. You could argue stictices say pit bulls contributed to 64% (27) …show more content…

Breed-Specific Legislation: The True Solution? From movie portrayals to our very own news media, that while people fawn over our furry friends they are still being victims to the fatal act of Breed-Specific Legislation. Breed-Specific Legislation (BSL) is the action in which certain groups and breeds of dogs are being pulled into a river restriction and prohibition, some even leading ultimately to death. Although BSL was introduced as a form of preventing bites and the safety of humans; scientists have proven as a fact that BSL does not at all stop nor decrease injuries and fatalities. This made a rise in attention in the early 1980’s when the number of fatalities and injuries rose from aggression by certain breeds which ultimately became
Dog bans have been a controversial issue in modern years. Some believe that action needs to be made to protect humans from certain aggressive dog breeds and others believe that attacks result from poor care. The author of “Dog Ban Only Solution to Attacks” expresses his opinion on supporting the bans. He supports this using several cases of anecdotal evidence and quotes, and tends to get emotional in several paragraphs. The article wasn’t very well written in my personal opinion and I disagree with his support for banning specific dog breeds.
Pit bulls are thought to be vicious dogs by nature. These animals have been tested by the American Temperament Testing Association and were proved to have a better temper than golden retrievers, Labradors, and poodles. The same association proved that these animals do not have an inherent behavior to be violent toward humans. The size of the human does not matter either. Any dog will nip at a child pulling the dogs tail, but pit bulls will not attack by their nature.
In the United States twenty-nine states are enforcing breed specific legislation since there is no state level law prohibiting the enforcement of the specific laws. There are four states that prohibit the enforcement of breed specific laws on a state level but some cases have slipped through the cracks of the state law due to being grandfathered in or finding a loophole through home-rule exemption. However, some states have begun enforcing more laws that identify, track, and regulate dangerous dogs not matter what the breed
Research confirms, Pit bulls are the least likely to be human aggressive. On the whole, you have to do a lot of work to make them aggressive to people. Pit bulls are….. Beauty without Vanity, Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferocity, and all the Virtues of Man, without his Vices. Pit bulls are really nice dogs, they have just been taught to do that.
In the 1980’s, the targeted breed was the Rottweiler, and from the 1990’s to now, the Pitbull has been the targeted breed. A major factor that has influenced BSL, is the popularity of dog fighting. The history of the Pitbull explains why they are such a wanted breed for dog fighting. At their origin they were bred to participate in bull fighting or bear baiting.
Pit Bulls are kind and loving. These dogs need a loving environment and a nice home. These don’t have lacking jaws, not a breed, and were war hero 's at one point in time. These dogs can be good protection. They won 't attack unless they feel threatened.
Reasons for this opinion are former respect, media bias, and other breeds also being dangerous. Once respected First of all, before the civil war pit bulls were a working breed that gained much respect. According to source 3, by the 1900’s one of the most popular was the pit bull. These dogs were kept as pets, guardians, herders, and hunters.
There is a long list of regulations that need to be meet to obtain a dog such as liability insurance mandatory spay or neuter and muzzled in public. With BSL the government basically controls who can and cannot have a banned
Third, Pitbulls can be particularly prone to defensiveness and aggression when they believe their families are in serious danger. Some breeds of dogs, like Basenjis or many types of hounds, will barely give their parents playtime. So when a threat occurs, they won't be coming to your side to defend you. But not Pitbulls. Pitbulls have been bred for generations to work closely alongside owners.
Dogs are not born to give use a source of entertainment at the expense of their lives. Many dogs do not make it to a loving home after they are caught. Dogs do not get the proper living space or food and water that they need to survive. These stereotypes cause pitbulls to be one of the most misunderstood types dogs in America. Centuries ago in England, dogs such as American Staffordshire and English
The article notes that overall, dog bites are rare and only a small number of people die from these attacks every year; however, in urban settings it will be more difficult to keep people and children safe from dogs. The Denver Post states they hope Castle Rock keeps these facts in mind when they go over the ban on pit bulls because identifying aggressive dogs is difficult, and often, pit bulls are found to be aggressive only after the

Dog breeds, what are they? Defined by the American Kennel Club Association or the AKCA a dog breed is a domestic race of dogs (selected and maintained by man) with a common gene pool and characterized appearance and function. So what does that really mean? Breeds of animals is actually a very hard definition to deter, but a common definition easy for us to understand is that a breed of dogs is when a dog looks like another in some cases how when we see a chihuahua we automatically call it a chihuahua without actually finding out. Is pre-determining a breed by looks bad after all?
