The work that police officers do is very complex. There are different rules and codes that they are supposed to follow in order to accomplish their job at their organization. Police officers present different behaviors while patrolling and in other areas of policing that creates many confrontations with the society as well inside their departments with co-workers and other people above them. In police departments exits different codes that police officers follow that many times create that police misconduct and police brutality stay under the rug, without been penalized. In the movie Fort Apache the Bronx it is clear how the police subculture was creating misconduct and police corruption in the precinct because some officers believe that they were protected under the cop’s code. According to Reuiss- Ianny the cop’s code is to not inform on a brother officer misbehaving. In one particular scene of the movie where two police officers threw a teen from the roof for not reason portrayed how police brutality have been effective since the beginning of policing. As my understanding most of the police brutality and misconduct have its roots on the belief that many police officers feel that they are untouchable and also they feel protected because of the brotherhood that exist among officers to not report a fellow officer when he or she is breaking the law. This kind of belief is very detrimental to police organizations because it is preventing that officers who act in an unethical way continue working and putting in jeopardize the relationship and the trust that society has on police. “The occupational solidarity within policing contributes to a subculture that generally discourages officers from interfering with the interest of other officers, it also encourages officers to protect other officer and finally it promotes officer aggressiveness” (Reuss- Ianny 1983). Police organizations have been evolving over the years, but still there are so many things that have to be address in order to create a better law enforcement institutions. Police misconduct and police brutality have been the center of many confrontations between police officer and society. It is imperative that police organizations change the police subculture that exist among them that protects any wrongdoing from being disclose in order to promote a more efficient service to society. In the process of doing this assignment I learned how cohesive is the relationship between officers that most of the times protect them when they are acting in a misbehave way. It is really impressive to see how one officer was seen as a traitor in the organization because he decided to report police brutality. It seems that when officers who have values decide to do what is right, this creates for them a path to be exclude from the brotherhood that exist among officers. The message that they are sending is that if you report a fellow officer your career is done. It is very frustrating to see that this behavior is very welcome in police organizations.
