Do you see people being hurtful?
The novel Milkweed along with personal experiences of my own, I have come to realise that words can have a powerful affect on your life. Words have the ability to lift people up, tear people down, and define a person’s character.
Words can sometimes reinforce a person’s positivity when used in the right way. Sportsmanship from an opposing team when my baseball team loses has lifted me up even when I felt like I played my worst. Calling a person mean names, and saying negative things about them can change the way a person views himself. Spinelli gives Misha the nickname of “Stop Thief” in Milkweed which robs him of his true identity and changes his outlook on himself. By being nicknamed “Stop Thief” Misha begins to degrade himself in his mind, because he finally realises that he is committing a crime. Bullying has always been a reality for me. People whom I thought to be my truest friends have turned their back on me and said anything and everything to bring me down.

When you do something in the world one way or another it will come back, either to haunt you or to reward you. In the story “The Fight” by Adam Bagdasarian, the protagonist, a popular kid named Adam, challenges big Mike Dichter to a fight, and after he loses he has no friends. He didn’t just lose a fight he lost his friends. The theme of the story, karma is seen throughout the beginning, middle and end.
In chapter 7 of the book, Words Wound, the authors Justin W. Patchin and Sameer Hinduja (2013) close out their book by taking one last opportunity to encourage teens to take action against cyberbullying. This chapter accomplishes that by focusing on inspiring teens to be a vessel of kindness at their school, in their community, and throughout the world. Though, with that in mind, Patchin and Hinduja (2013) understand that at first thought, carrying kindness to the world may seem like an unrealistic task to many teens, as the world can appear to be an overwhelmingly large place to young people. Therefore, it can become all too easy for them to believe that the actions of one person cannot make a difference. To show this is true, consider the body paragraphs of characteristics of a good sport, and being a good baseball player. Kids that become baseball players should have a lot of sportsmanship. Sportsmanship helps with making good friends. It also helps with showing people that you are kind to one another. Being a sport to people shows a lot of respect.
The most common words that cause emotion are forms of the word “kill”, “hopeless”, “paralyzed”, “crushing” and “sorrow”(57, 67, 109). These words can cause an array of emotion depending on the reader such as sadness, sorrow or pity towards the characters. The words listed earlier can cause different people, different emotions but all the words are negative. These negative words can cause the people to relate their emotions to that of the characters. O'Brien uses negative words to try and submerge the audience in negativity and sadness.
Whale Talk Bullying, harassment, and racism is a very common scenario among our new generation, that happens far too much. In fact over eighty percent of people have experienced some type of bullying whether it was physical, verbal, or even cyber bullying. Chris Crutcher saw the realism of our society and the outlook on bullying and wrote the book Whale Talk to emphasize the impact of bullying, racism and violence, and how serious the matter can be. Furthermore how it can affect a person and their everyday lives.

“Burn” by Suzanne Phillips gives readers the inside look into the horrors of bullying. The author not only the talks about the victim, but also the sad truth about many victims and how they suffer while bystanders of the act remain quiet and choose not to notice and admit that bullying exists. “Burn” is a moving story that talks about the journey of Cameron Grady and his inner fire. Cameron Grady a 14 year old freshman would've never imagined high school to be such torture. One big thing he had a personal interest in was running, but other than that he's never been much of an athlete.
In “How to Handle a Bully,” by Kathiann Kowalski, an experienced journalist, Kowalski reports the different strategies to stop bullying. She informs that bullying is at its peak in the late teenage years, but can start in an early age. Kowalski concurs that girls intimidates as much as boys; however, they do it differently. She explores many reasons why bullying occurs at the first place, and who starts bullying. Kowalski exemplifies the situations that victims could be in, and the solution on how to handle the bully.
My teammates and coaches have made a huge impact on me as well. They taught me that if we truly wanted something we can only achieve it by working together. Teamwork is key in a group sport. If you all aren't working together it will be nearly impossible to get the job done.
Nowadays bullying has become the major and common problem for children and can awfully affect their lives in many different ways such as depression and suicide. William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, takes place in the 1950’s in England, where Golding used to be a school teacher and face many types of problems among children. According to his novel, bullying is a particular problem for Piggy who cannot fit in a community because of his initial appearance. Even though Lord of the Flies has many purposes and it is not focused on just one target, Golding explains bullying and its impacts on Piggy very smoothly beside the main idea of the story. He shows how bullying causes Piggy to lose his self-confidence, breaking his glasses and became dependent and intimidated.
“Don’t Call Me Ishmael”, written by Michael Gerard Bauer is a humorous novel that interacts with the readers especially young readers by exploring what high school is like for those who are being bullied and harassed but it also explores different stages of how friendships first develops. The protagonist who is a 9th grader named Ishmael Lesseur is sticking to the shadows and staying out of everyone’s way especially Barry Bagsley who has target Ishmael and has been harassing him since first day of year 8 at St Daniels Boys Collage. Throughout the book Ishmael struggles with identifying who he is and what he is worth. Michael Gerard Bauer has added sarcasm, irony, puns, embarrassing and humorous moments in the book to keep all the readers engrossed

Someone 's identity defines who they are. There are no two identities that are the same. , Everyone is unique in different ways. Finding oneself may take time and might not be exactly what you are expecting. In the novel “Milkweed” by Jerry Spinelli, the protagonist Jack assumes many identities but ultimately does not know who he is.
Bullying is a phenomenon existing as long as humans exist. The fact that it didn’t have a name for years doesn’t mean that it wasn’t a widespread way of behavior, in cases where two different types of people were involved ; the strong and the weak ones. Although bullying is considered as a form of aggression, or in some cases as an infringement of the human rights, “bullying is commonly regarded as an aspect of aggression”. (Roland and Idsoe, 2001), there are significant differences between them , the most important of which that “bullying is different from peer conflict. It is conflict between individuals that do not share equal physical and / or psychological power.
