April 11, 1861 the bloodless battle at Fort Sumter, the beginning of the Civil War and a possible end of sectionalism and slavery. In the year of 1860 a man named Abraham Lincoln was elected for President. Many living in the south believed that “…the election of a Republican President represented the victory of the abolitionists…” (TB pg. 304), and that they had no choice but to secede from the Union. Due to seceding states, a war broke out between the Union (Northern states) and the newly assembled southern states came to be known as the Confederate States of America or Confederacy. In 1862 after the Battle of Antietam, President Lincoln issued a document called the Emancipation Proclamation that would help free slaves. During the war both the Union and Confederacy had different advantages over the other. The Union had the industry to create necessities for the war such as guns, bullets, uniforms, etc. They also had a stronger navy for blockading ports from trade between the …show more content…
By allowing the African Americans to join the armed forces, it gave the Union an advantage of man power. When they registered for the army they had to go through a series of tests to determine which area of expertise would fit them best. Most of them worked as cooks and labors, and a very small portion of them ever saw the front lines of war “African Americans only made up 10% of the Union army” (T. Legion). At first African Americans were payed, cared for, and fed less than the others, until 1864 where they were then treated just as equal as the white troops. The recruitment of African Americans happened before the Anaconda Plan was put into effect, a plan that would surround, blockade, and squeeze a surrender out of the Confederacy. With the extra man power and a strong navy, the Anaconda Plan succeeded and the Union won the
The First Battle of Bull Run or First Battle of Manassas was the start of the bloodiest and deadliest war on American soil to date. Shortly after, on April 12, 1861 the Southern states had seceded and the South had fired upon and captured Fort Sumter.

The Union and the Confederacy had many soldiers to fight in the war. The Union had a population of 22 million soldiers and workers. The Confederacy had 5.5 million soldiers and workers. One of the best advantages the Union had been 22,000 miles of railroad tracks to move the soldiers and supplies like, guns, tents, and plates and utensils. The South only had 9,000 miles of the track
Why the Union won the Civil War Numerous historians have voiced their opinions on the outcome of the American Civil War. The Union was successful for a number of reasons. First of all, they had a great number of men compared to the South. The North had approximately twenty-two million people during the war.
Railroads were in place, which allowed the Union to restock their supplies and move their men at a much faster pace than the Confederates. At the beginning of the war, these were all clear advantages for the Union. But, this was not a perfectly executed campaign. Mistakes were made.
The advantage for the Union was that they had more men and more resources. The Confederate Army also had resources but not as many. The Union army had 87,000 men fighting in this battle and in the Confederate Army there was 45,000 men fighting. Giving a huge advantage to the North. The weapons used were guns, swords, and canons.
In this war it shows how much more advanced the Union was compared to the Confederacy with the Union having more than 11 times more manufacturing, and almost double the farmland and railroads. In this war railroads had a
The Civil War started because of uncompromising differences between the free and slave states over the power of the national government to prohibit slavery in the territories that had not yet become states. Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860 as the first Republican president, and pledged keep slavery from expanding in the territories (Text, 402). After Lincoln was elected, South Carolina succeeded from the Union and soon other slave states in the deep South joined. The seceded states together formed a new nation called the Confederate States of America (Text, 404).
After the election of President Lincoln in 1860, all tensions within the country had come to a head. At that time, eleven southern states seceded from the Union and on April 12, 1861, the Confederates attack Fort Sumter and the Civil War officially
The South lost a lot of potential industry when states decided to join the Union. The Confederacy, as a result, would be unable to compete with the Union. Second of all, because of the lack of industry, the South would not be able to produce as much munition for the war effort. The North would have had the upperhand. Third of all, the South did not have as many factories as the North.
A civil war was fought in the United States between the Union and Confederate armies over the main issue of slavery. In the beginning of this war the Confederates were the dominating force although the Union began to make make their way when they won the Battle of Antietam (September 17, 1862). This win allowed Abraham Lincoln, the president at the time, to issue the Emancipation Proclamation to keep the Unions lead. The creation and implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation created a turning point in the war between September 1862 and April 1865. This event led to many social, political, and economic outcomes.
The North had “ 2.1 million men who fought for the Union” (Goldfield, The American Journey, 407) this equaled about half of the North’s men of eligible age to fight. A majority of the Unions military about 200,000 men where African Americans, a hearty amount of which was ex slaves. An additional amount of soldiers came from Irish and German immigrates as well as northern men themselves from all classes including common labors
The Union had more railroad lines and they had the telegraph system. The telegraph system was a huge advantage for the Union because they could now send messages thousands of miles away in less than a minute. President Abraham Lincoln could now command the Union’s generals in the safety of his own office. The railroad lines gave the Union a big advantage because they could transport resources faster than the Confederate
The North had an excellent Navy that had the ability to blockade things that were headed to the Southern states. The South desperately needed food, weapons, and ammunition but weren’t able to get their supplies because the North had blockades that stopped the supplies they needed. The North also had gun factories, shipyards, and coal readily available at anytime which puts them at a huge advantage over the South. They had more money and were just more advanced in their industry, which helped them win the civil war.
In the years of the Civil War, African Americans played an important role in contributing to the Union Army and the confederate army. A great deal of African American men volunteered to join the Union Army but only after they gained freedom did they participate in fighting the war. Besides the Union Army, there was the confederate army which consisted of slave labor whom were forced to aid the confederacy following their masters. Later in the war, the Confederacy ran short on men and were in need to supply soldiers, leaving no choice but to enlist the colored men. Not only were African American men impacted from the war, but African American women also served to supply and aid in the war.
