This passage begins with Taylor talking about how hard life can be in ways she never knew about, even after experiencing a difficult life herself. Kingsolver uses the quote, “‘I don’t know exactly how to say this,’ I said. ‘I thought I’d had a pretty hard life. But I keep finding out that life can be hard in ways I never knew about’” (Kingsolver 181) to indirectly characterize Taylor. The quote shows that Taylor has faced many challenges in her life but realizes that there are still many hardships out there. This quote shows her humility and openness to learning through new experiences. Estevan’s response, “I can see that it would be easier not to know,” (Kingsolver 181) uses diction to express a tone of empathy. He understands the struggles …show more content…
Taylor feels that Estevan is unfairly assuming that all Americans are responsible for the actions of their government. Taylor feels bad for turning a blind eye to the government sending out, “shiploads of telephones to torture people with” (Kingsolver 181). Taylor uses the metaphor to convey how dangerous technology can be and how it can harm others. While Taylor feels guilty, she also realizes that she is not directly at fault because “nobody asked my permission” (Kingsolver 181). This conversation between the two characters shows how once people are aware of certain things, they have to choose whether to confront the situation or remain silent. This characterizes Taylor as someone who is struggling to find her place. She is conflicted between Estevan’s criticism of the government’s actions and her own experiences in life. The use of irony in this passage reveals how complex and unpredictable life can be. Ironically, Taylor said, “Sometimes I feel like I’m a foreigner too,” (Kingsolver 181) because even though she is American, she feels like an …show more content…
Taylor’s experiences relate to the thematic topic of community support. With the help of her new friends, Taylor slowly adjusts to her new home and faces the challenges that come when trying to adapt to a new environment. Taylor is having an internal conflict because she is struggling to fit into her environment. She is uncertain and scared, which creates tension within her throughout the novel. Kingsolver uses figurative language when Taylor says, “You would think you’d stepped right off the map into some other country where they use dirt for decoration and the national pastime is having babies” (Kingsolver 181). This hyperbole shows the tremendous difference between Kentucky and Arizona. Taylor is struggling to adjust to her new surroundings and a new way of life. Taylor is telling Estevan how different everything is in Arizona compared to her hometown. She tells him, “People don’t look the same, talk the same, nothing” (Kingsolver 181). This quote expresses how much Taylor is struggling. She notices the differences in people’s appearance and the way they communicate, which reveals her sense of
Taylor, the main character in the novel, is described as a strong and independent young woman. She is self-assured, even though her mother, whom she’s very close to, always provides assurance in her endeavours. On her arrival in Arizona, Taylor faces her problems confidently and independently, which shows her strength and sense
I believe this also plays a huge role in Taylor’s coming-of-age, although I am not sure if for the better or for the worse. I say this because due to this treatment Taylor has a mindset of ‘I always do it right’ and does not like to ask for help.
She says “With a kind of misery I could not imagine.” Taylor is realizing the new horrors of the world and the new found empathy for this child. She acts in a noble manner by taking in Turtle and not putting her back on the street. This is a true act of courage, that now every human has in them but Taylor did; she had the courage to take in Turtle but she then developed compassion and love for the child that she did not birth.
Winfrey voiced in her article, Taylor was "just like me, she was just like you. And like everyone who dies unexpectedly, she had plans. Plans for a future filled with responsibility and work and friends and laughter” (The Oprah Magazine, 2020). Taylor was a relatable young woman, working towards goals and had big dreams for her future. Breonna Taylor was an emergency room technician working towards becoming a nurse and had plans to start a family.
At first, all Taylor wants in life is to drive away from home and avoid pregnancy. As soon as Taylor gets a car, she leaves everything
Although Taylor Greer learned about Estevan’s life and says “I thought I’d had a pretty hard life. But I keep finding out that life can be hard in ways I never knew about.” , Taylor realizes that through multiple steps she comes to face this reality. Some of these steps she made are either 1) Confusion or 2) An instant realization.
Her point is that talents will not improve unless used in situations that, although may be difficult, will improve and open up more opportunities. Despite this letter is written to her son, the point she tries to prove to her son is a philosophy that should be lived by in life. As she says in the letter, “the habits of a vigorous mind are formed in contending with difficulties.” The struggles and toils everyone experiences in life are part of the never ending learning process that is required in life. Even though these difficulties may be a pain, your own character and talents will never improve if the these struggles did not
The “Bridge to Terabithia 2” is an example of fan fiction because Jess dies and Leslie lives. In the book, Leslie dies and Jess lives. For instance, it states that Leslie is driving with her parents, the excerpt informs us that Jess is injured horribly and in a medically induced coma: “Her best friend survived the initial surgery and was placed in a medically induced coma” (Ch.2 Paragraph 1). The quote explains who was in a coma, which is Jess, and who is alive which is Leslie. We know later on the Jess dies ultimately to “save” Leslie’s life.
(12). Brooks wrote these lines with a very specific point to not live out of revenge or spite or just to get it over with but to rather value every little experience and cherish life for what it really is. The poet is writing about an experience that's different for everyone is what life really is. There's no set rule for how to live your life, there's no guarantee that your life is going to be amazing but, there's also no guarantee that your life is going to be
Queen Gertrude is the Queen of Denmark, Hamlet’s mother, the widow of Old Hamlet and the wife of Claudius, brother of her dead husband. Gertrude is ignorant and a woman who means no harm but because of her actions it contributes greatly to the terrible events that occur throughout the play. In this play there’s many conflicts, one of the first conflicts was when Gertrude married King Claudius two months after Old Hamlet’s death. Gertrude is ignorant because she’s not aware of anything happening. For example she’s not aware that King Hamlet’s murder was by his own brother Claudius, even though they were some hints out there to show that it was King Claudius who killed Old Hamlet.
Character relationships is seen in the love Taylor has for Estevan and how this love begins to, not only change her worldly views but it also began to change her psychologically. This is seen as how emotional she has become because of the heartbreak of not being able to have the person she loves be with her, but through this heartbreak, she was able to mature as a person. Also, character relationships can be seen through the relationship between Taylor and Mama. It illustrates Mama as a person that Taylor is able to go to for advice whenever and wherever which describes the mother daughter relationship that they have. This is revealed through Taylor calling her mother for help in what to do after the emotional conflict she is experiencing from heartbreak.
In the beginning, Taylor was appalled at the idea of raising a child and she even tried to come up with ideas of how to get rid of Turtle from her care. It was in Taylor’s best interest to escape pregnancy since she had witnessed multiple girls drop out of high school due to becoming pregnant. “It was in this frame of mind that I made it to my last year of high school without event. Believe me in those days the girls were dropping by the wayside like seeds off a poppyseed bun and you learned to look at every day as a prize” (4).
This summer I read Bridge to terabithia, it’s a book about intellectual and emotional courage. In the book, two friends create the magical land of terabithia while facing the real world. This book is mainly about intellectual and emotional courage because that is what is demonstrated in the most important scenes of the book. I think the biggest act of courage in the book is when Jesse overcame the loss of Leslie, his friend. In the quote above, Jesse is talking to his little sister and crowning her queen after Leslie died.
Taylor was born in North Carolina and has been living with his parents since he was born. In this observation, which
All the themes of the novel link together, as family and friends resolve Taylors story arc by giving her a place to belong. Ultimately, the themes of the novel are used in such a way that allows readers to gain a better understanding of the characters. The themes of the novel are themes of the major characters worlds, essentially giving readers a look inside the characters head.
