The Twenty-Year Long Journey of Odysseus
“My name is Nohbdy: mother, father, and friends, everyone calls me Nohbdy.” The words uttered are a famous quote from The Odyssey by Homer. It is a story that was written in the 7th century B.C. Odysseus (the main character) is lost at sea for twenty years. He was the reason for almost all of his mistakes. With each threat they faced, more of his crew died. By the end, he was the only one to make it. Odysseus' weaknesses generated all of his misfortune, but his strengths saved him in the end. In The Odyssey, it begins with Odysseus telling King Alcinous about his journey. He tells him that he was detained for an extensive time on Calypso's island. He tells him that they were weathered hard by Zeus.

He is presented with his lost crew mates, his mother, and Tiresias. Tiresias tells Odysseus he sees anguish ahead. They will find Helios's cattle. but if they follow their intent of getting home, they will reach home. But if Odysseus and his men raid the cattle, Tiresias sees destruction, in which only Odysseus survives. Whoever can string Odysseus’s bow and shoot through twelve ax handle sockets will marry her. While Odysseus is still in disguise, he asks to try. He does this so flawlessly , it is amazing. Odysseus then gets his revenge. He says, “So much for that. Your clean-cut game is over. Now watch me hit a target that no man has hit before, if I can make this shot. Help me, Apollo.” He shoots Antinous and kills him. The fight breaks out and Odysseus and his trusted friends kill the suitors. This shows his quick temper which could be both a strength and a weakness. In this though, it was a weakness. He put his trustworthy friends in danger. He put his son in danger. Penelope has to know if this is Odysseus. Odysseus gets mad at Penelope for wanting to move the bed he made and he exposes himself this way. Odysseus, king of Ithaca, loves his wife, as well as the power he has over the island. However, while he is journeying back to his city, suitors begin to swarm his home. These men aspire to wed Penelope, who is still married to Odysseus. This threatens Odysseus’s marriage and sense of control. Odysseus is afraid of losing all that is important to him, causing him to challenge and kill all of the suitors.
Odysseus finally returns home and comes to find that men are lining up for his wife’s hand, even though Odysseus is still alive. Odysseus is infuriated and gets his revenge on all the suitors. He kills Antinous first because he was ridiculing him and he was also the strongest of all the suitors. He shoots an arrow through his throat as Antinous is drinking some wine.
Or he shall never return back home to his wife and son. This book shows the stages of being a good man and slowly becoming not only a great man, but a true hero. This paper will discuss the development and true characteristics of an epic hero that Odysseus develops along the way of his journey back home. Throughout the Odyssey, it has become clear that Odysseus has a lot of weaknesses especially ones that revolve around his behavior which causes the life of others at times. Odysseus is the King of Ithaca, a small island in Greece, and he is known especially for his quick-thinking, courage, cunning and resourcefulness. In Homer’s Epic Poem The Odyssey, Odysseus struggles against gods, mythical creatures and his own weaknesses in order to return home to Ithaca. Odysseus washes up on the shores of Phaecia and is taken in by the Phaeacians after having his ship overthrown by Poseidon. The Phaeacians questions who Odysseus is, and Odysseus recalls his encounters with gods and mythical beasts after trying to get back home after fighting in the Trojan War. He speaks of tales of how he was cursed by Poseidon by blinding Polyphemus, his encounters with Circe and Calypso, his venture to the land of the dead to see Tiresias, and how all his men died because they ate the cattle of Helios.
I looked out the window, expecting to see the runaway crew member but instead I saw a different man who I immediately recognized as Odysseus. My spirits rose because I knew he was smarter than the others. Once again I lured him into my palace and offered him food and wine, which he refused. He only wanted to get his men returned to their original forms and to continue his journey to Ithaca with them by his side. When I finally convinced him to drink my wine, he was not affected by it.
The first trait is that he is a very arrogant person and this often puts him and his men in danger. Secondly, Odysseus can be deceitful and not fully communicate the facts of each situation. Odysseus was a weak leader and his lack of vision in not seeing the strength and possibilities in his men combined with his inability to effectively communicate to those around him ultimately led to his failure of not being able to safely deliver his men back to Ithaca. Imagine being apart from your family for over ten years, fighting for your life in a war, and in the many battles and problems you will face on your way home from war. Would you be able to fight a cyclops, pass a dangerous whirlpool and have to face the fact that your crew betrayed you? In the novel The Odyssey written by Homer, Odysseus must do all of these things and more. He has been away from his wife, son and many other family members for over ten years now, fighting for his life on his journey home after fighting in the Trojan war.

Many creatures try and stop him from achieving his goal of returning home, but he and his crew have to push through and get home. Upon Odysseus arrival to Ithaca, Athena hides his identity to help him defeat the suitors. She turns him into a very old beggar to conceal his identity from everyone, most importantly the suitors. Odysseus reveals himself to his son Telemachus, cowherd and the swine herd. The nurse Eurycleia recognizes him because of a scar he got years ago by a boar’s white tusk. Penelope doesn’t recognize Odysseus at first sight because of the disguise.
After Telemachus and his father share a reunion, he leads his father to his house. Upon arrival, Odysseus disguises himself as a beggar and finds that the house has been taken over by sires trying to court his wife as a result of his actions. After completing Athena’s task, Odysseus reveals himself to his wife. However, Odysseus finds it very difficult to convince his wife that he has truly come back. When Odysseus reveals something no one else knows, Penelope runs to him and throws her arms around him.
