Paying College Athletes There are several reasons why college athletes should receive a form of payment. The athletes always seem to be practicing, which means that they are almost always busy, leaving little time for anything else. Additionally, they have to go to their classes and study in order to participate in that particular sport. In contrast, giving the athletes money could potentially be a bad idea. Some athletes might receive more because their sport may generate more money.
I think that employees who recieve tips shoould not be paid the same minimum wage as other employees because if that happened, then the prices of the menu would go up and they would lose business. Also some of the employees would get shortened shifts and maybe even laid off even if they have worked very hard. I think that these employees already get paid enough as it is with their tips. If this really went through, there would be a lot of problems for the owner to deal with at Waffle Now. First off, I think this is mainly a bad idea because the resturaunt will lose alot of customers due to the menu items going up in prices.
The $2.13 per hour figure is true, but waiters/waitresses never see that amount. It is required statewide that any minimum wage employee earn at least $9 (“Massachusetts Law about Minimum Wage”). No matter how complex the author makes the convention of tipping seem, no one is getting paid $2.13 in actuality. The only purpose of using that statistic is to exacerbate the idea of feeling sorry for these individuals. Seattle is currently considering to raise their minimum wage to $15 it’s understandable that the city is very large and things cost more money but if they raise minimum wage to $15 that will only bring inflation causing things to cost only more money than it already does. Lewis’ third point was not a hundred percent convincing “The Case Against Tipping” was a great essay; however, it lacked statistics. If the author gave more statistical facts the essay would in the end be more logical and the author would have better luck pulling in the readers. The examples located in this essay were organized quite well, into a chronological order; therefore, made the entire essay more interesting. Michael included both pathos and ethos into this essay which brought life and significance to each example he presented.
Life can be hard when you have to manage two lives. College athletes are living the life as full-time students and full-time athletes. This can be a very difficult task for college students. It is my position that college athletes (also sometimes called student athletes) should get paid while others might say that they should not be paid. I believe they should be paid because with their school life and athletic life they don’t have time for jobs.
Try to visualize that you are a college athlete, you would have a busy schedule. To start off your day, you wake up for an early morning practice. Following your early morning practice is all of your classes, that usually last all afternoon.
