Today, most organisms are living in a marine ecosystem. For example, an estimated 50-80% of all life on earth is found under the ocean surface. This may be due to the fact the ocean accounts for 99% of Earth’s living space. With so much life and biodiversity going on, there are bound to be problems; problems that can affect the organisms in and out of the water.
One of these problems is red tide. Red tide is caused by microscopic, marine algae. Algal blooms occur in freshwater as well as marine environments. In general we can say that red tide occur throughout the world, and is affecting marine ecosystems in many places like Scandinavia, Japan, the Caribbean, Florida and South Pacific.
The red tide is not a recent problem or issue. The first

Millions of dollars are poured into red tide research and prevention every year to help predict when and where a red tide is going to form.

Generally, marine biology is the study of organisms, their relationship to the environment, and their behavior, in addition to studying the chemical aspects of bodies of saltwater ("At A Glance" & "NOAA Fisheries").
Tides are created because the Earth and the moon are attracted to each other, just like magnets are attracted to each other. The moon tries to pull at anything on the Earth to bring it closer, but the Earth is able to hold everything except the water. Since the water is a liquid, the Earth cannot hold to it, and the moon is able to pull at it. Each day, there are two high tides and two low tides. The ocean is constantly moving from high tide to low tide, repeating this process indefinitely.
My interest in Marine Biology stems from both my education in the sciences & also my love of the Ocean & diving. My current Biology A-Level course has inspired me to learn more about how organisms live & interact in the same environment. I find this to be very relevant in terms of Marine Biology, as a reduction in species diversity will have a knock-on effect on the whole ecosystem, this is due to the delicate balance of the marine ecosystem. Another section of the A level course which interests me is the process of eutrophication, this is another way in which my A level course links with Marine Biology, it can have devastating effects on British Canals & lakes, due to the loss of aquatic life from anoxic water conditions. As a Junior Member of the Marine Biology Association I enjoy reading the articles in the twice-yearly magazine & use the journal access to expand my knowledge.
Have you ever stopped and wondered about the sea’s biological system? That’s probably a no. Ever since humans been on the Earth, they have been taking advantage of the abundance of species living in the Ocean. With this, has come overfishing. Overfishing has drastically changed marine environments in many ways, species have gone extinct, and environments have depleted.
However, during El Niño, the wind gets weak and so the warm water in the west goes back to the east. As a result, the eastern Pacific ocean gets warm. So basically El Niño causes warmer water which leads to less phytoplankton. Because there is less Phytoplankton—the bases of the food wed—marine species are highly affected. Eventually, these marine species dramatically decrease in their habitat.

Water Pollution is a huge environmental problem that has serious effects on marine habitats, animals, and water quality. BP1: The world's marine habitat has been getting worse because of how bad the pollution has gotten. “ Over 80% of marine pollution comes from land based activities “ (source 5 ).
