The Republican sniper had medical knowledge from training that helped him, for the rest of his life. An opposing sniper on a rooftop targeted and shot the Republican sniper. The shot had left his arm immobilized, and left him in a lot of pain. Since the bullet was still in his arm and most likely fractured the bone, the Republican sniper saturated the bullet hole with iodine to prevent infection and clean the wound. Then, he covered the wound in a piece of cotton and added the dressing over it. If the sniper wasn't experienced, then he wouldn't know to add the iodine to his wound. When the military is training the soldiers, it is taught to keeps cuts and opening in the skin clean at all times, so they don't die from infection. The training

One of the troops in his 45th division was shot in the leg by a machine gun. The soldier was brought to a more experienced medic than him to be treated. Franklin paid close attention to every detail as the more experienced medic doctored the hurt soldier’s gunshot wound. Franklin explained, “The medic merely poured sulfanilamide powder onto the wound and tied on a small Carlisle bandage” (3-4). So, just as Franklin had seen done, he began doing just so- pouring sulfanilamide powder onto his soldiers’ wounds and tying them with a small Carlisle bandage.
This shows the sniper went through his brain and fast forwarded to the future to see what the outcome could have been and then made the choice. He could have been quick to fire, but he thought through it and of the consequences. Another example is “ the sniper lay still for a long time nursing his wounded arm and planning escape” ( Flaherty 5) So meaning he was smart enough to be multi-tasking. He was smart enough to have the resources and the experience to treat his wound.

However, during World War II, there were less deaths due to infection and bleeding than World War I. This was primarily due to medical and surgical advancements.

“The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty is a short story about a sniper in a civil war who was in a standoff with an enemy sniper. The sniper was sniped in the arm by the enemy, and couldn't shoot his rifle. He treated his wound and came up with a plan to trick the enemy into thinking he was dead. He dropped his rifle and hat off of the roof he was laying on, and when the enemy wasn’t suspecting it, he shot him with his revolver. He then went to check the body just to find out it was his brother.
The Sniper became remorseful and was curious as to who his enemy was. “The Sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face” (O’Flaherty 22). The Sniper was willing to shoot any enemy he saw even though he was injured and not able to use his right arm. Trusting people is not always a good thing. People are capable of unbelievable things like killing their own brother just because there is a difference of opinions.

Demonized as an assault rifle, many people incorrectly believe that the “AR” in AR-15 stands for “assault rifle” or “automatic rifle,” when actually, it stands for “ArmaLite," the name of the company that initially developed the rifle.
