Have you ever wondered to yourself what the future holds? What technology will be invented, or how we will get around? Harrison Bergeron tells a story about the future; not one of flying cars and robots taking over, but rather equality. In this futuristic essay it is described that people have certain advantages over other people according to looks, strength, and intelligence. However the government wanted everyone to be equal to one another to lessen discrimination. In order to counteract these advantages the government decided the best way to make everyone equal was to put distractions on everyone who wasn’t completely ordinary. The style of writing portrayed in this nonfiction journal best relates to a dystopian future for our society. The purpose of this writing would be to show that the world could be a much simpler place to live in if civilization was treated equally. With everyone born as humans no matter the color of our skin or the ethnicity that we were raised in it raises many to question why we cannot treat one another equally and why we do not get along or respect one another. While we are not any closer to figuring out why our world kills its own kind over feuds, I believe religion plays a big factor in why certain cultures are enemies. In the futuristic society Harrison lives in, the government concludes the best way towards equality is simply hiding all perfections. To counteract the society 's physical perfections the government would put masks on peoples faces to hide their beautiful complexions from the rest of society. This made normal people feel less intimidated by the pretty people in society. The solution to make the strong equal was to add weights to their body. For example, they would put buckshot vests on people and bolt the vest together so the individuals could not take them off. Lastly they would mentally cripple the intelligent people in society by putting microphones into the ears of the intelligent to prevent them from going into deep thought. These microphones would chime off every twenty or so seconds and distract these people from having a deep thought and reaching a higher intelligence by doing so. The obvious thing to do to solve this situation would be to just take off the masks, right? The dystopian government also thought about this making it a law to never take off the alterations making them equal to everyone else. This law was punishable by jail time or death. What about secretly overthrowing the government so everyone could be themselves?
