THE PICTURE 'I wonder what that nice-looking beggar really means, and who he happens to be?' That was what I said to myself when I returned to the laboratory. 'If it is true that, now and again, Providence does write a man's character on his face, then there can't be the slightest shred of a doubt that a curious one's been written on his. I wonder what his connection has been with the Apostle,--or if it's only part of his game of bluff.' I strode up and down,--for the moment my interest in the experiments I was conducting had waned. 'If it was all bluff I never saw a better piece of acting,--and yet what sort of ringer can such a precisian as St Paul have in such a pie? The fellow seemed to squirm at the mere mention of the rising-hope-of-the-Radicals' name. Can the objection be …show more content…
Let me consider,--what has Lessingham done which could offend the religious or patriotic susceptibilities of the most fanatical of Orientals? Politically, I can recall nothing. Foreign affairs, as a rule, he has carefully eschewed. If he has offended--and if he hasn't the seeming was uncommonly good!--the cause will have to be sought upon some other track. But, then, what track?' The more I strove to puzzle it out, the greater the puzzlement grew. 'Absurd!--The rascal has had no more connection with St Paul than St Peter. The probability is that he's a crackpot; and if he isn't, he has some little game on foot--in close association with the hunt of the oof-bird!--which he tried to work off on me, but couldn't. As for--for Marjorie--my Marjorie!--only she isn't mine, confound it!--if I had had my senses about me, I should have broken his head in several places for daring to allow her name to pass his lips,--the unbaptised Mohammedan!--Now to return to the chase of splendid
Alex Gibney, Ophelia Harutyunyan, and Suzanne Hillinger, in their documentary Totally Under Control, analyze the U.S government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. To highlight the failure of the US government to address the uprising pandemic, Gibney, Harutyunyan, and Hillinger use comparison and contrast, casual relationship, and visual representation. They adopt a serious and pragmatic tone in their documentary, as they appeal to their global audience’s logic and establish their credibility to explain the U.S government’s shortcomings to address the uprising pandemic and the reasoning behind much of it. Comparison and contrast is used throughout Totally Under Control, as the directors draw parallels between Korea and America’s responses
Since Leda shows eccentric behaviors such as showering in bleach and only eating one piece of burnt toast, Leda is a robot. Leda and the story hinted that she was a robot when she was "walking across the cold tile, she stared straight ahead, avoiding the mirror, which would not have reflected a person back anyway" (1). Because of this small detail in the text, the reader could interpret what this means. This could be another way saying that she is inhuman without saying it directly. Another part of the story Leda showed strange, inhumane demeanor was when she was going to school.

This song have showed us very different representation of what it means to be our own person and what this world has come to. Macklemore shows us makes us realize we buy things based on what’s popular and makes us fits in, how we let material items determine our identities and change who we are as people, the people we look up to make us do things and how Americans buy items based on an advertisement. He brought back a way that was effect knowing we would listen because it came in a form that was direct, but you would not understand if you did not listen so closely. With what message we were giving are you really going to let matlertic items make you as a person or are you going to be yourself creating your own identity by standing outside
Hawthorne depicts the US Federal Government as cruel, careless, fake, and untrustworthy towards the fellow citizens in this passage from “ The Custom House.” He expresses his distaste for the Government through his use of Metaphors seen all throughout as he compares the government to the eagle that “ has no great tenderness, even in her best of moods, and, sooner or later,- oftener soon than late,- is apt to fling off her nestlings with a scratch of her claw, a dab of her beak, or a rankling wound from her barbed arrows.” to show how cruel they are, he also shifts from a caring tone to a frustrated tone to reveal his attitude towards the government as well as revealing their true intentions, lastly Hawthorne uses imagery to describe the government
Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer, tells the story of a young man named Christopher McCandless who decided to go and survive in the wilderness of Alaska without correct preparation. McCandless was a man with as transcendentalist-like mindset, an adventurer, an explorer, and a hiker. He migrated away from civilization and society with the goal of living in solitude and living his life to the fullest through nature. The audience was introduced to McCandless’ views towards society through McCandless’ journey through Alaska, and the depressing yet inspiring events that led up to his death. Krakauer creates emotional appeals to connect him with McCandless to credit himself as a writer, as well as to develop the audiences’ feelings of McCandless.
In my RIP, rhetorical devices symbolize the dragon as an evil force by delivering its aura and persona. For instance, the phrase where the dragon “soar[s] above the midnight sky with bat-like wings” is an imagery that creates the scene by featuring the dragon’s physical traits and depicting it as a flying creature. To physically characterize the dragon, the simile that the dragon has “scales like a slythering snake” compares the dragon to a snake to emphasize its deceptive nature. Recognizing that the dragon is known as the “Destroyer,” this allusion also refers to a religious reference of the Devil, while the “Creator” is known as God in Christianity. By describing the dragon, the rhetorical strategies portray the unnatural creature as a malevolent entity.
What makes a piece of writing effective? A piece of writing includes many things that make it effective, such as the style that appeals to the reader and rhetorical devices used in the writing that make it much more interesting. In this piece of writing titled “ How to tame a wild tongue “ includes many of these things. Even starting with the title it makes me curious as to what the piece will be about. There are two devices Anzaldua uses effectively in her essay which are anecdotes and parallel structure.
No Nickels or Dimes To Spare In the book, Nickel and Dimed, Barbara Ehrenreich writes the story, “Serving in Florida.” She describes her experience living as an undercover waitress when in reality she’s a journalist for culture and politics with a doctorate in biology. Ehrenreich experiences trying to survive on multiple low income jobs to understand what it is like to be in their shoes instead of being apart of the higher middle class.
In How to Tame a Wild Tongue, Gloria Anzaldua uses rhetoric and personal anecdotes to convey and persuade her argument that Latin Americans are forced to relinquish their cultural heritage, and to conform to white society. The evidence she provides comes in a variety of platforms, both literal and rhetorical. Rhetorical, being through emotional, logical, and credible appeals through her text. Literal being explicitly stated, without any further analysis necessary. When she utilises the modes of appeals, they are subtle within the texts, which leads the reader to analyse as they read.
Basketball fans come from all walks of life flocking to their television sets as the game flashes on the screen. They ignore real life for those two hours to bask in the glory of their favorite players. LeBron James being the basketball superstar he is knows his audience and uses that to his advantage while writing his article for sports illustrated. LeBron used syntax and diction specific to his fan base to capture attention and create a believable piece of writing. James’ ego shines through his enticing words in the conclusion of his writing.
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
Rhetorical Analysis on Anzaldua’s How to Tame a Wild Tongue The passage How to Tame a Wild Tongue is a very defensive and straightforward argumentative essay which defends her language and the people who speak it against the discrimination that the author herself has experienced first hand (Ethos). From this text we can infer that the author is most likely from hispanic descent as she is speaking spanish a lot of the time throughout the text. This text mainly speaks about the discrimination many Mexican-Americans suffer because they are spanish speaking.
Jack Nguyen AP English 3 30, July 2015 Nickel and Dimed Rhetorical Strategies and Notes Thesis: Ehrenreich’s personal use of varied rhetorical strategies allowed her to divulge the working conditions and struggles of the poverty-stricken class to the readers in order to provoke them to realize that something has to be done about poverty.. First Body: What: Allusion Pg. 2, Logos Pg. 37. How & Effect: Ehrenreich uses these personal, rhetorical strategies based on her experiences as a low-wage worker in the poor working class. “If you don 't want to sink, you better figure out how to swim” (41). Although Rex Walls was not always an admirable father and role model, he did make an essential point while teaching his daughter, Jeannette, how to swim. In life, not everything comes without resistance. As Jeannette Walls describes throughout her life story, sometimes people are forced to face hardships that make them question their whole life. However, as seen in her book, it is important to learn to take those hardships and use them to shape one’s future for the better.
