For this trimesters’ AR assignment, I chose to read Savvy by Ingrid Law. Savvy is about a girl named Mibs Beaumont. Mibs is not like anyone else, in her family you gain a savvy on your thirteenth birthday. A savvy is like a power, or supernatural ability. Suddenly the Beaumont family is faced with another issue, besides a possibly dangerous savvy. Poppa gets into a car accident, and it could be deadly. Momma and the oldest Beaumont child, Rocket rush down to the Salina Hope Hospital where Poppa is in critical care, so the preacher's wife, Miss Rosemary unexpectedly comes to the Beaumont house to care for her and the other children. At first Mibs thinks her savvy is waking things up, so when Miss Rosemary throws her a birthday party at the church …show more content…
Mibs a very detail oriented character, the details she notices give her important information, such as who Will Juniors real dad is. Mibs’ savvy is to read minds when people have ink on their skin. I think this could be good, for finding out secrets or questions, and bad if she hears something that she shouldn't for her own good. Mibs is selfless, because she risks her own safety for others. She was the original one who decided to get on that bus to save Poppa. Mibs is also caring, throughout the trip she cares for her younger brother Samson. She often feels responsible for everyone's safety. Mibs is also persistent. On the bus, Will Jr. tried to convince her to tell him her secret savvy, that she couldn't tell anyone, but she wouldn't let in no matter how hard it was for her. Mibs is incorporated in my game, because each of the players experience her trip to Salina, they experience the obstacles she went through. The antagonist is the car accident that Poppa got into. The car accident messes up Mibs’ most important birthday, and creates chaos. The car accident brings another antagonist to the mix, Charlene. Charlene is Lester's crazy ex girlfriend who is always trying to boss Lester around. When lester makes a pit stop at her trailer park to give her the money he owed her, she sees that there is a reward for the missing kids, and when they try to leave she hides Samson in her trailer, making them have to turn around to get him. …show more content…
“Monday through Wednesday, we called our thin stretch of land Kansaska. Thursday through saturday, we called it Nabransas.” (page 3) This is the area between Kansas and Nebraska, and where the church is. My starting point in my game will be the party at the church. Another setting I will portray in my game in the Salina Hope Hospital. This is the hospital where Poppa is in his coma. In my game this will be the end

The Erlking by Sarah Shun-Lien Bynum confused me, even though the interpretation sounded interesting and fantastical. At first, I wondered if my confusion dealt with me not reading or hearing about “Der Erlkönig” before. After thinking that, I read the poem online; I really liked the poem because of creepy it is. I saw some correlations with Bynum’s version, but confusion still lingered in my head. I’m thinking a combination of the story structure and the lore (the fairies and elves) didn’t mix well with me.
In the book The Walk On the main character, Alex Myers is taking his time to do things instead of rushing through them. First Page one says, “but the JV football team plays only four games a year and practice didn’t start till mid-September.” Alex wanted no part of that. He wants to have more games and he wants to play for Varsity. So Alex takes his time in tryouts.
Author Elizabeth Hinton makes a major point in chapter 4. She makes a point that Nixon and Johnson’s presidency initially began the process of imprisoning people of color. In discussing both Nixon and Johnson’s policies and describing how there programs functioned in efforts to improve the violence that occurred in urban communities, it was emphasized that Black low-income communities became a target. The shift between Nixon and Johnson altered the great society and the new frontier by expanding it. Social programs and reforms that were created, influencing the way policing is structured.
Melba overcame various barriers and obstacles to get the proper education she rightfully deserved. No matter the verbal and physical abuse she received, she was still able to keep her head high. They were all taunted, humiliated, and attacked without mercy by the rest of the students at Central High School. I was astonished by the amount of bravery all of the Little Rock Nine had to keep going back to school. Another enjoyable aspect of the book was when Melba described in great detail the life she lived after her experience in Little Rock.
Rex who always promises his family things but never seems to fulfill them is both protagonist and antagonist. He is sympathetic because of his charm and playfulness but not so much when he is drunk. On the other hand Rose Mary is less sympathetic because of her self-centeredness. Because she wants to be an artist she declines jobs even if her family needs the money for food. After they move to Welch the racial differences become more apparent.
The novel The Mighty Miss Malone is a beautiful story about a normal family living during the great depression, Deza Malone's family has the motto "We are a family on a journey to a place called Wonderful" and Deza is consistently marked in her school as someone who is sure to go far in life. “Center Field” The book I'm reviewing is "Center Field" by Robert Lipsyte. The book is about a kid named Mike Semak. Mike is a star center fielder for his high school baseball team. His life was going great.
Dad and Momma takes the children on a vacation to Birmingham, which is Momma’s hometown. Byron doesn’t like the plan of leaving because he has to leave his delinquent friend, Buphead. The family thinks they has lost their little girl, Joey, but luckily she shows back at up the house wondering. That night, the Watsons leave to go back to Michigan.
Imagine being a 17 year old African American kid always being judged just because of his skin color. Everywhere you go you feel like all eyes are on you, especially when you go to a school that only has eight black kids. That's exactly how Justyce McAllister felt in Dear Martin by Nic Stone. In the book, the main character Justyce goes through a lot of conflict involving his skin color. Even though he has a full scholarship at Braselton Preparatory Academy, and is a very smart student, he still gets judged.
Home Is Where The Hurt Is Is home really where the heart is? When one knows the history of their hometown, can they truly still uphold the same level of respect and admiration? The speaker in “South” by Natasha Trethewey battles this obscurity as they return to their home, Mississippi. As the speaker returns home, physical features of the state triggers reminiscence. Though these attributes are what makes home so special to the speaker, simultaneously it causes the poet to realize the meaning behind it all.
She gains enthusiasm to spice everything. Although, she has the courage to develop positive thoughts through her. An example when the wounded men were lying on the ground. Midge had the thought of helping them out by creating a canteen in France. It was hard for Midge to open up a canteen with Ethel and Anne because her uncle didn’t agree with it in the first place and her Uncle was afraid to lose her.
Which of the authors in this chapter provided you with the most useful information for improving your own writing, and why? Intro:I never find a way where I can easily start writing with no problem. I am either too distracted, too bored, or trying too hard to focus that I actually don’t get anything done. Forcing myself to sit down and focus doesn’t give me a great start, it worsens my mind because I’m feeling more pressured.
El Deafo In Cece Bell's graphic novel, El Deafo, she shares a her story using humor about the difficulty of growing up with a hearing loss. The book I’ve chosen is called Impossible and is written by Nancy Werlin. She is the author of many other books such as The Killer’s Cousin, And Then There Were Four, and The Rules of Survival. I haven’t read any of her other works. The book is a fiction book, this book is mostly directed towards teens and young adults. Normally I do read fiction books and I find this genre of books quite interesting.
