Scrooge and Marley Final Essay
In time, all things must grow and change, some just need a little push. In the play “Scrooge and Marley" by Israel Horovitz, Scrooge is a dynamic character by means of his change from a selfish person to a generous and giving one.
At first Scrooge was a selfish person that no one should have to be. This is prominently shown in one paragraphs 63 and 64 “Portly Man: But sir Mr. Scrooge…think of the poor. Scrooge: Take your leave from my office, sir, while I'm still smiling.” This demonstrates Scrooge as a selfish person because he is stingy with his money even to the less fortunate. In addition to the previous quote In Act one Paragraph 10. “ Scrooge: If I could work my will, every idiot who goes about with “Merry Christmas” on his lips, should be boiled on his own pudding and buried with a stake of holly through his heart.” This shows him being

A piece of evidence supporting my claim is located in Act two, scene five, paragraph 21 “Come back with the man, Adam, and I'll give you a shilling . Come back here within five minutes and I'll give you half a crown”. This shows how generous he is, coming from the fact that he is giving a random person lots of money for an easy task, instead of making people work for an absurd amount of time. Another piece of evidence supporting my claim that Scrooge is a good person in act two comes from this quote of Scrooge talking to the portly man again in paragraph 53, “If you please not a farthing less A great many back payments are included in it, I assure you.” This shows that he changed because before in act one he denied the portly man any money but now by the phrasing “A great many back payments are included in it” it shows that he is not only giving the portly man money for the poor, but a lot of it. This shows that he went from selfish to generous because he is donating and that is a selfless
What reason do you have to be merry? you're poor enough!” This shows how rude Scrooge is to those he finds below him. All in all, with the quotes provided one can see how horrible Scrooge treats those around him.
Before the visits, Scrooge never offered to help anyone, nor wished a merry Christmas. The older Scrooge was stingy towards his money and always thought what was best for himself. Towards the end of the play, Scrooge transforms into a different person, becoming generous instead of
In Stave 1 Scrooge was very arrogant and greedy. When Scrooge refused to donate money to portly gentlemen it reminds me of how the Salvation Army asks for people to donate money but even the wealthy won’t donate. When Scrooge’s nephew Fred wishes Scrooge a Merry Christmas and invites him to dinner, Scrooge becomes angry. Even when Scrooge saw Jacob Marley’s ghost he was frightened but still didn’t change.
Scrooge is greedy and denies donating to the poor and needy, leaving them to grow sick and cold and die. Jimmy cracks safes and steals hundreds of dollars from people. But, another character brought about a change to the main characters, turning them from careless and rude people to thoughtful and kind people. In A Christmas Carol, it says, “Scrooge. Because he would not… no!
Scrooge used to be misanthropic and grouchy in Stave one. In Stave one, the text states. “ But what did Scrooge care? It was the very thing he liked. To edge his way along the crowded paths of life, warning all human sympathy to keep its distance, was what the knowing ones call ‘nuts’ to Scrooge.”
This comes to show that Scrooge was very lonely and grumpy. Scrooge wasn't morally doing the right thing. He could have chosen to be merry and give merry back but he
And for the first time, Scrooge expresses regret over a past lack of generosity. Scrooge has just relived the events of his childhood when he was left alone at school over Christmas. One particular memory is when his old headmaster was with him when he was alone at school on Christmas and he tells him to prioritize money over relationships. This is an important example of Scrooge learning at an early age that money is more important than people, generosity, love and
Everyone was surprised when Scrooge began behaving extraordinarily kindly and joyfully towards everyone. Scrooge is shown in the story's opening as selfish when he refuses an invitation to a family Christmas party. “ I’d rather see myself dead than see myself with your family!” (Horovitz and Dickens 270) This evidence shows that
Although skeptical in the beginning, Scrooge begins to understand why he must change his ways, and he discovers what he can do to become a better person. Throughout most of the first chapter, Scrooge is very greedy. When two kind men come and ask Scrooge for a small donation to help benefit the poor Scrooge asks if any of the prisons or poorhouses are still in operation, and the men tell him: “Many can’t go there; and many would rather die.” To which Scrooge replies with: “If they rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.” Scrooge was already being greedy by not giving money to the men, but he was also being extremely rude by saying people should hurry up and die.
This also reflects Dickens' message that money doesn’t buy happiness because Scrooge was rich but unhappy. Scrooge represents the rich in this novel since he is always mentioning money as well as bringing up how much others owe him. Scrooge was unsympathetic towards other people, he showed no interest in helping the poor. He refused to donate to charity, because he thinks he's done enough by paying taxes to support the prisons and workhouses. An example from the novel is that Scrooge’s nephew, Fred said, “His wealth is of no use to him.
We come to learn that Scrooge changes with his attitude. One quote from the text that accurately confirms this is…“No warmth could warm, no wintry weather could chill him. ”(page 3). This excerpt from the text explains how troubled and insecure he is inside, using a metaphorical perspective. We, as the readers, can draw inferences and conclusions on how loathsome he seems.
At the beginning of A Christmas Carol,Scrooge is mean, selfish, and greedy. He is mean, because on pg.9, he never donates to the poor, and he always yells at little kids. Scrooge is also selfish because on pg.12, he never pays a day wages for no work. They say “it's a poor excuse for picking a man’s pocket every twenty-fifth of december!”Also, another word is he is greedy,on pg.17, says he is caustic and cold as ever and never gave anything to anyone. He said “what do you want with me.
Scrooge in "The Christmas Carol" shows how much he hates Christmas, and everyone he works with to change to a happy person with the help of others. Scrooge emphasizes, "What a fine day fellow... An Intelligent boy, a remarkable boy. " This is a critical part of this novel because this shows Scrooge overcame his dislike of Christmas and his entire disliking of people. Instead of rudely gesturing to people, he is now starting to act nicer, and more mature.
In the beginning of the story, Scrooge was a lonely greedy man. He also hated Christmas and didn’t like other people. One quote that shows that Scrooge was greedy is, “What
