The invention that has caused the most negative impact on our world would have to be religion. There have been very few conflicts that were not started by religion. For instance, the first Crusade was started by a sermon by Pope Urban II. In his sermon, the pope was urging military support for the Byzantine Empire to fend off the migrating Turks. Urban was saying that the war was to guarantee the safety of pilgrims on their pilgrimage to the Holy Land, which Muslims had taken over. The First Crusade resulted in the Roman Catholic Church retaking Jerusalem.
