As there were sectional differences among the Union and Confederate states, the Civil War altered and affirmed American principles as a result of presidential decisions that were inspired by events occurring in the war. The Civil War spawned after the South seceded from the Union due to the South not being able to participate in the decision of the next president as well as over the idea that slavery might be abolished. Abraham Lincoln established the 13th amendment, in which the amendment states that slavery shall not exist in the United States, thus affirming the principle that the government has the power to make decisions based on protecting the rights of people and that all men are created equally.
