As there were sectional differences among the Union and Confederate states, the Civil War altered and affirmed American principles as a result of presidential decisions that were inspired by events occurring in the war. The Civil War spawned after the South seceded from the Union due to the South not being able to participate in the decision of the next president as well as over the idea that slavery might be abolished.
