Selena was born into a musical family in Lake Jackson, Texas on April 16, 1971. Selena’s father Abraham Quintanilla was also a musician, and got her started on singing at age of 10. At the beginning of Selena’s career she was the lead singer of her family band called, “Selena y Los Dinos”. Selena originally sang in English but learned to sing in Spanish to reach out to the Latin community as well. Selena’s genre of music is called “Tejano”. Tejano music is a mixture of both Mexican music and other styles such as country. In order to focus more on her music career she was removed from public school in eighth grade and was homeschooled until she was seventeen. When Selena was fourteen years old she recorded her first album in 1985 with the band. This first album was released in 1995 and known as, Miss Primeras Grabaciones. Selena had released six more albums over the next three years, and was a ragging success. Selena attended the Tejano music awards in 1987, where she received the award for Best Female Vocalist. She is the youngest out of three children, A.B Quintanilla III and Suzette Quintanilla. Selena first showed her interest in music at the young age of three, and at the age of six she could sing English and Spanish like a pro. However, this type of music had a new boom in post-war decades as a consequence of the improvement of socioeconomic opportunities. New music styles such as female-based duet and the orquesta tejana came up as well the re-emergence of conjunto music occurred. Guadalupe San Miguel Jr. discusses the significant role the businessmen Armando Marroquin and Paco Betancourt played promoting Tejano music. Their company Discos Ideal favored Tejano music was recorded by several local artists from Texas such as Valerio Longorio, Paulino Bernal, and Beto Villa among others.
She attended at the University of Miami but sadly couldn’t finish all four years because she didn’t have the financial support for higher education. She is best known for being a Cuban-born journalist, actress, television host, and also for motivating many Hispanic women. The article, “40 Latinas Who Have Changed the World!,” states, “...Cristina inspired and motivated for decades with her self-titled hit Univision show.” She is a role model for many Hispanic women in Florida. According to “Time Magazine,” she is one of the top 25 influential Hispanics in the US.
This led her to become a model. Later on, she was signed by a record deal at the age of 19, transforming her from a gospel singer to a pop singer. Houston’s career took off from there. She earned several awards for her unbelievable voice, made many debuts on TV shows, and flourished in the music industry.
