The Natural Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 has effectively established the drinking age to be 21 in order to drink alcohol in all fifty states. According to the National Minimum Drinking Age Act this law has saved 17,000 on the highways since 1988, and I believe this law should remain. 18-year-olds should not be allowed to drink. At the age of 18 one should not be allowed to drink alcohol because of the maturity level, increasing rates of car accidents and alcohol poisoning. Of course, many will disagree on the grounds of twenty-one being the age to purchase alcohol. Whether the legal drinking age is twenty-one or eighteen, teenagers are still able to get ahold of alcohol. When in college most students under the age of twenty-one can get ahold of alcohol from using fake ID’s or through their older friends. This makes teenagers want to rebel and try out alcohol just because they are supposed to be kept away from it and against the law. Teenagers tend to get overly drunk when they get a chance because they don’t know the next time they will be able to drink again. According to a study, 22% of all students under 21 compared to 18% over 21 years of age are heavy drinkers (New York Times). Teenagers deserve a chance to learn from their mistakes. Here’s why those who think that the legal drinking age should be lower than twenty-one is wrong. Teenagers who consume alcohol illegally can cause their older friends in college or bartenders at a club to get into major trouble. When teenagers drink alcohol they do not think about the consequences it can have on them and others. The thought of being considered as an adult at the age of eighteen is exciting to them.
