The Electoral College is a terrible system designed for electing the president of the United States. For the people who do not really know or understand the Electoral College, it is a body of people who ultimately decide who wins the presidential election. Each state holds an election for the popular vote. The candidate who wins of the state's popular vote gets all the states allowed electoral votes. How many electoral votes a state gets is determined by the population of the state. So New York, a state with 54,556 square miles of land and a population of 19,795,791, has 29 electoral votes while Alaska, a state with 663,268 square miles of land and a population of 738,432, has 3 electoral votes.
The Electoral college was founded in 1787. Reason being, people were spread out and could not really find out who the presidential candidates were or what they stood for. So the Founding Fathers formed The Electoral College, so the

Do you think that separating Mill Spring, Columbus, and Tryon and giving them a certain amount of votes based on their population would be fair? Well, let's take a look at the different populations of these towns. If Tryon has the good majority of Polk County’s population, the people running for office would campaign more there because that would be the best place to gain votes. Columbus would be the second most campaigned area, with Millspring being the last. So, how would the people of Mill Spring feel if their votes didn’t matter as much as Tryon or Columbus? Imagine the protesting for equality! Why are states such as Alaska not protesting their votes do not matter as much as anyone else's? So why not get rid of The Electoral College? Why not base all elections off the popular vote? Maybe it’s because people aren’t as informed on the severity of this failure of an election system. Who exactly does the electoral college hurt? The answer to that question is everyone it doesn’t
Most people think that the Electoral College was born to bring the loser of the popular vote to win the electoral vote and so on, win the election. In the early years when the United States became settled, the constitution established a way to decide how the nation would govern itself. Delegates didn’t agree that the president and vice president of the United States should be selected by a direct popular vote of the people, but rather so settling on a system involving an Electoral College. The system was initiated to choose the president and vice president indirectly by deciding electoral votes in each state, as each state has a slate of electors. Should the system of indirect voting of the president and vice president be put to an end?
Most candidates in the race have to win certain states because of how big they are. But if the electoral college were to be abolished these smaller states would not really matter in the election at all. The number of electors must be “equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives” (Document 2). Since these two types of committees are based on the population it must be equal, not less or more. This system also allowed Washington DC to have three electoral votes, it is a system that lets these little states to have a vote.
A single citizen’s vote really does not matter. The Electoral College has been around since 1787 has a part of the Constitution. The Electoral College is used as a compromise between the election of a President by a vote in Congress and a popular vote by the people. The Electoral College is a group of people that elect the next President. The Electoral College should not be changed or abolished, but kept the same.
Throughout American history, there were five cases where the electoral college votes did correspond with the popular vote during the elections of: Jackson, Tilden, Cleveland, Gore, and Clinton (Doc. G). When the founders gathered together in 1787 to write the Constitution, they were worried about many topics and did not want the Constitution to fail just as the Articles of Confederation. They considered many topics and thoroughly wrote a remarkable Constitution, excluding the slavery of African Americans, they did not want the government to be too strong and also did not want the people to have too much input. They greatly questioned: Who will choose the President? Therefore, they created the electoral college that is merely based on population
The Electoral College is a system where each state is given a number of electoral votes determined by the number of the representatives in the state combined with two electoral votes for the number of senators, and three electoral votes from the District of Columbia, totalling five hundred and thirty eight votes. The people then vote for their candidate as president and the winning presidential candidate in that state wins the electoral vote for that
The Electoral College is a system of voting created by the writers of the Constitution. The main goal of the Electoral College was to ensure that the citizens of the United States could not elect the president directly. The writers of the Constitution believed that the voters would not be properly educated on who they were voting for and consequently make a poor choice. The Electoral College is no longer in need today given that the public is adequately educated on the candidates for elections as a result of the excess amount of communication today. The Electoral College should be abolished because small states are over represented, the system is unfair to third party candidates, and a tie leads to a vote in the House of Representatives.
The old system of electing electors to the college is still in place – and it should be. The Electoral College should not be abolished because it properly divides power - but still keeps it in the people’s hands, keeps extremists out of
Every state has a different population per electoral based on the state’s population. For example Wyoming’s population is 563,626 and every 187,875 is another electoral vote, therefore they have 3 electoral votes. While California’s population is 37,253,956 and every 677,345 is another electoral vote, which means that California has 55 electoral votes (Document #2). This is unfair because Wyoming gets more votes from every 187,875 people while California receives a vote from every 677,345. Therefore the Electoral College favors smaller states rather than bigger and more populated
The Electoral College was created when the small states feared that large states would be more powerful in determining presidency. Therefore, the Electoral College was created and is considered to be a technique that makes it easier to elect a president and a vice president. The way it works is that each and every state gets electors. The amount of electors is the sum of the number of members the House and the Senate has. The states decided on how many electors are chosen.
The Electoral College is a group of people whose vote represents the state of the United States; they formally vote during the presidential election in accordance with the vote cast by the public to elect the next President of the United States. With the definition provided and the role the electoral college plays in the presidential election, it does not correlate with the rule of democracy. Democracy allows the public to directly vote for an elected official to represent them in the government and carry out the will of the people. But with the Electoral College, the voters are voting for the presidential electors and not the candidate they want to become their next President.
First, with the specifications of the electoral college there only needs to be 270 electoral votes to a person for them to win. With this rule only 12 states need to be won CA, TX, FL, NY, IL, PA, OH, MI, GA, NC, and NJ(DOC A) and this is only a part of the overall population of America. While
The electoral college also helps the small states have an opinion that actually is heard in the presidential election. In class, it was discussed that Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota together, though their combined population is less than that of Oklahoma, each of those states has three electoral votes, whereas Oklahoma just has seven votes. Going by electoral votes, a candidate would have a better chance at winning the election if they won over Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota versus Oklahoma. With the electoral college, a candidate could win over all thirty-nine small states and win the entire election. Though the candidate could be supported by less than a quarter of the population,
“The votes of those living in small States count for more than those residing in large States” (Vandenburg 189). Many small states are assured 3 electoral votes regardless of population, giving them more power (Klinker, McClellan 1). “What remains of the Electoral College is merely a scheme for apportioning votes by state in a way that grossly distorts the principle of one person, one vote” (Klinker, McClellan 1). Some believe that the Electoral College protects
The Electoral College is the process to which the United States elects the President, and the Vice President. The founders of the Constitution came up with this process. This was done to give additional power to the small states, and it was done to satisfy them. It works by the citizens of the United States electing representatives called electors. Each state is given the same amount of electors, as they are members of congress.
Electoral college has been with us since the birth of the constitution, and to this day we are still using this type of system to this day. The Electoral College is a system that the United States uses to elect our upcoming presidents and vice presidents. Each state has electors equal to their senate member and house of representatives, however who ever gets the highest popular vote in the state gets the electoral vote. The issue is the Electoral College do not give votes to the people, but to the states. Which has some unfair consequences.
