Marijuana is highly controversial as the conflict on whether it should be made legal seems to be a splitting decision in the United States. In 2013, 58% of American citizens supported the legalization of marijuana (Gallup, Inc). South Carolina should make recreational marijuana legal due to it being much safer than already legalized drugs and it can be used to alleviate a lot of medical ailments. To start, marijuana has been proven to be much safer than already legalized drugs, such as tobacco and alcohol (Project, Marijuana Policy). Furthermore, there have been no deaths due to a marijuana overdose. There are many people who argue that marijuana should be legal for medical purposes. In fact, a growing number of states have legalized marijuana for medical use. Marijuana contains delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main ingredient in marijuana that makes people ‘high’, that may help treat a range of illnesses and symptoms such as increasing one’s appetite and reducing nausea. It can also decrease pain, inflammation, and muscle control problems (Abuse, National Institute on Drug). Furthermore, the chemical cannabidiol (CBD), another ingredient in marijuana, but it does not get people ‘high’, could potentially help reduce pain and inflammation, control epileptic seizures, and possibly treat mental illness and
This subject has been debated numerous times over the past few years. People’s points of view and researches about the topic have varied greatly. Some people believe that marijuana should be legalized, while the rest feel should stay prohibited. Proponents of marijuana argue that there are numerous medical benefits and that the drug is not more harmful than tobacco or alcohol. On the other hand, opponents argue that marijuana is too dangerous; its legalization would increase the chances of the drug falling into the hands of teens and that marijuana use often progresses to the use of more dangerous drugs like heroin and cocaine.
A gateway drug means marijuana use could open the door for potential abuse of more powerful drugs, such as cocaine or heroin. People get addicted to these harder drug easily. The opioid epidemic in the United States has been brought about by the over-prescription of opioids to the general population. Subsequently, this has resulted in scientists looking for other pain relievers that are of non-opioid in nature. Marijuana is one of these options, the drug is a known pain reliever, without a high risk of addiction and a relatively zero risk of overdose. At the turn of the decade, more states in the US passed laws that permitted medical and adult-use of marijuana making the drug to be more available to the general population.
As with any change to current laws, there is a cause for contemplation. The thought of legalizing a drug that has been said to be a "dangerous gateway drug" for years, causes many concerns to arise. Many people are worried about marijuana becoming legalized, but have justified the legalization of alcohol and tobacco. It's no secret that the two have been proven to be very harmful, causing illnesses such as cancer, emphysema, cirrhosis of the liver. Now, when we talk about marijuana there’s more ways to ingest it than smoke it, so you can go tit-for-tat against tobacco on that sense. Alcohol, on the other hand, has had far more deaths from irresponsible use than marijuana ever had. Research shows that nearly 88,000 people die from alcohol related accidents annually. If you try to find anything about deaths linked to marijuana accidents, it’s very hard to find any solid information. The best I could find was that within 1997 to 2005 there was roughly 279 marijuana related deaths over an 8-year period.

In this circumstance it is safe to say marijuana is significantly less deadly than alcohol. Equally important we come along with the effects of these substances on the brain.
It is said to reduce the effects of chronic pain from cancer, tumors and ulcers, severe nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy and various other medical conditions. A point to highlight here is that while we may only debate about its use or ban, the real significance of use of cannabis is understood by those who are sick and cannabis provides the only means of cure and

An estimated fifty thousand people die from an overdose on alcohol, or alcohol poisoning each year. Again, we see that it is impossible to “overdose” on marijuana, and therefor it has caused no deaths from this, either. Perhaps the most common way that marijuana has been known to cause death is when used during driving, the same way that alcohol already quite often is. Another source of the disapproval is judgement.
Alcohol is considered to be a significant contributor to death and is responsible for most onset diseases and injuries. However, marijuana is a psychoactive substance that has posed far fewer health and safety risks.
