“You can't win unless you learn to loose,” Kareem Abdul- Jabbar once said. Many kids compete in competitive sports but it is a controversial topic. American children not only participate in after school activities, they also compete. In 2013 7.7 million children played on a high-school sports team, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. Youth competitive sports takes place in and out of schools. Many say that students should not compete in competitive sports because it can result in many students giving up because they don't make tryouts, but it can also make kids strive harder to keep going and to not give up. Students should compete in competitive sports because it helps kids learn important life lessons. By having students compete in competitive sports it teaches students to respect others, and to set goals and achieve them.

The players must know that when you say you’re going to do something, you mean it.A few ways players can show respect is by not talking when someone else is talking, shaking hands with the opponents and referees after the game, and retrieving the basketball for the referee when it goes out of bounds.Players must learn that the amount of respect they show others can’t be determined by their levels of frustration or the outcome of a basketball game.”This can teach kids to respect others which is a huge lesson everyone needs to know in life. This lesson is used everywhere in school, at home, at sports games, at stores, basically everywhere.
