What is the nature of sin? According to Merriam-Webster dictionary sins are “an offense against religious or moral law”(***). Some collectivist societies including, China, North Korea, Cuba, people that live in these countries are controlled by the way they think, act, believe. In Anthem by Ayn Rand there are some characters that create sins according to the World Council, some sins consists of love, speaking forbidden words like I, creating new items. One character in particular is Equality 7-2521 whose moral thoughts causes him to create sins, for instance love for Liberty, the Unmentionable Times, freedom, but Equality 7-2521 ends up living his life to the fullest the way he wants. The hidden tunnel is from the Unmentionable Times. Rand states, “Since the Council does not knows of this hole, there can be now law permitting to enter. And everything which is not permitted by law is forbidden”(Rand 31). If the World Council did not discover it no one in the society can claim the hole as one’s discovery. Another sin that the Unconquered transgress is that he discovers a new power called Electricity. The author states, “A Street Sweeper! A Street Sweep walking in upon the World Council of Scholars! It is not to be believed! It is against all the rules and all the laws!” (Rand 69). Since Unconquered is a street sweeper he is not welcomed by the World Council of Scholars because he is low class. Lower class citizen are not allowed to create something or discover something and call the discovery theirs unless they belong to the World Council of Scholars. In the end Equality 7-2521 changes in his moral assessments of sin to the way Equality thinks is …show more content…
To Equality 7-2521 freedom is very important to him. Rand states, “But what is freedom? Freedom from what? There is nothing to take a man’s freedom away from him, save other men. To be free, a man must be free of his brothers. That is freedom. This and nothing else” (Rand 101). As a ruler the ruler should not be able to take away one man’s freedom just to save another man from something that he did and punishment the rest of society because of it. Now that Equality 7-2521 is in the Uncharted Forest he feels different about himself. To show that Equality is different Rand states, “We awoke when a ray of sunlight fell across our face. We wanted to leap to our feet, as we had too . . .but we remembered suddenly that no bell had rung and that there was no bell to ring anywhere”(Rand 78). Here readers see that Equality 7-2521 is overjoyed with being free and doing whatever he wants to do with his life. At the end of the book Rand uses a special word with being free. In Anthem Rand states, “The word which can never die on this earth for it is the heart of it and the meaning and the glory. The sacred word: EGO”(Rand 105) The sacred word “EGO” shows the importance of a person or individuality can never be lost it might just be used from time to time person to person the wrong way. Equality finds individuality to be a right that should be
This is explained by Equality on page 101, paragraph 2, “To be free, a man must be free of his brothers. That is freedom. This and nothing else.” When Equality runs off into the Uncharted Forest, this is his light breaking through the darkness. This is his separation.
A Sinner’s Journey Anthem a dystopian fiction, by Ayn Rand takes place in what seems like the future. Equality 7-2521 is surrounded by plain old buildings, in which contain certain types of councils. Equality bent the rules, he was different and did not know how be like his brothers. Thinking alone and thinking outside the box were prohibited. When Equality and International 4-8818 went out one day they stepped upon a underground tunnel, and for the first time experiencing the works of electricity.
Equality began to cherish his individuality and the independence that comes with it. When he states how he “wept in deliverance and in pity for all mankind” (98) he calls attention to the fact that him being ahead of his brothers is not a bad thing for him, but for the people who are still oblivious to the power of the word “I”. This also displays Equality's good intentions for society. He is not angry or rash about the information he has
‘‘We are nothing mankind is all , By the grace of our brothers are we allowed our lives ‘’ Ayn rand the author of Anthem wrote the book after she left Russia because of the war, she moved to New York writing Anthem a dystopia about the future of mankind In her novella there are two major themes talking about the collective society vs. individualism were every one is the same nobody has the authority to be a individual also the council of vocations determines there jobs life and future the people don’t have a choice whatever they choice they accept and that is it no discussion, the council of vocation has removed all individuality so when equality may have started to uncover the coated truth the council has another plan for him as known the council of vocations has an absolute rule when it comes to jobs and they assign equality to the home of the street sweepers because they want to keep him down. The council of vocations make equality a street sweeper because they hope to prevent him from developing his intelligence even more as they assumed that may have dumbed him down and get people to assume he is beneath them and this is achieved when the council makes a mockery of equality for wanting to join the world council of scholars “A street sweeper! A street sweeper walking upon the world council of scholars!
He will do anything to receive it even breaking many laws and leaving the society he grew up in. This is also displayed when Equality discovered a house from the Unmentionable Times. How he embraces the true ideals of ego from the Unmentionable Times. Equality also strives to be rewarded, appraised and most of all to be welcomed into the council of elders. Equality’s desperate attempts to be alone, be rewarded and appreciated are finally accomplished by the end of the novel when he flees the society with his beloved, the Golden
The novel “Anthem” by Ayn Rand was a short heartwarming story that was set in the future presumably after World War 3. In Anthem the society uses Collectivism; they live in groups and put the group above individuals. These people live similar to an ant colony their only purpose for existence is for the overall good of the whole. With this being said, people are not to see themselves as anything more than part of the group.
“We were born with a curse. It has always driven us to thoughts which are forbidden. It has always given us wishes which men may not wish. We know that we are evil, but there is no power or will in us to stop it” (18). Equality 7-2521 is born into a society in which individuality is a crime.
For Liberty is so beautiful and “glowing” that she cannot be ignored. It, however, is against the commandments of Equality’s brotherhood to peruse her, as it would unbalance the mutual emotion between all men by creating preference. In a wretched battle of nature vs nurture, Equality finds that despite these regulations, he cannot stop himself from yearning for Liberty, whom serves as “blade of iron” cutting through to the undeniable truth that Equality is a selfish being, generally motivated by his own personal
Sin is one’s belief of wrongdoing. Not everyone’s view of sin is the same. In the novella Anthem, by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521’s believes individualism is a sin (in the beginning). His viewing is wrong because individualism is what drives humans to differ from one another, and is overall a good thing, not a bad thing. However, Equality views it as a bad thing because he has been “brainwashed” through his entire life by society to believe that.
Equality defies the council of scholars and his government by studying and learning about the world. “How dare you think that your mind held greater wisdom than the mind of your brothers” (Rand 71). Equality goes against
Individuality allows every person to be themselves and be different from each other. However, In Ayn Rand’s novella Anthem, Rand describes a society where the people were not allowed to openly be themselves, or else they would be punished for being different. The main character, Equality, notices he is different slowly throughout the novella, but kept continuing to be like everyone else for awhile. These rules exist in this society to strip human individuality in order to achieve total equality.
For my collage, I chose individualism as the big idea for “Anthem,”by Ayn Rand. The reason I chose individualism is because throughout the story Equality expresses individualism in everything he does. Some of the pictures I chose would single out one particular thing, making the one that was different an individual. I also chose a zebra to represent individualism, because not one zebra has the same pattern, though they may not be trying to be unique, they are. Individualism does not have to be represented with only pictures, but it can also be represented through many quotes.
How could losing individuality affect a society? The novel Anthem by Ayn Rand is about a guy named Equality 7-2521 who is trying to find himself in a society where everything is controlled and different. Later, he finds himself even though he will have to go through many obstacles to get there. The process behind losing individuality in an Anthem’s society are in forcing strict laws, brain washing of their citizens, and removing of family. The Anthem society in forcing of strict laws made it easy for everyone to lose their individuality.
no one knows about the freedom of men. To have individual freedoms, you must free yourself from things that hold you back. Equality 7-2521 had his brothers and the council holding him back from his freedom and self-ego. Equality 7-2521 tries to show the council his invention.
However, since the council fails to recognize this idea, Equality has two options: either face imminent execution or flee. By choosing the latter and fleeing into the Uncharted Forest, Equality finally is, in a physical sense, free from the rule of collectivist society. Now he is alone in the forest, alone with his thoughts. He decides where he goes, when he sleeps, what he eats. However, he is still not fully
