The show that I choose to focus on for this critique was Law & Order: SVU. I choose Law & Order: SVU because the Special Victim’s Unit or SVU is the second version of the extremely and well-known Law & Order series, and my opinion the most exciting of the series. The show follows officers who specialize in handling sexually based crimes and offenses. I decided to critique season five, episode nineteen. The reason why I choose this episode is because after hours of watching this in my opinion showed the most examples of what society believes a forensic psychologist is.

It becomes clear that they do not give a lot of information on what exactly Dr. Wong is there for, many times in the episode he his referred to as a cop. So, his actually role is confusing. He pops up a lot and spends a lot of time in the actual police department, I’m not sure if this is because he used to be a police officer. A real forensic psychologist would not spend this much time at the police department. Yes, they are there to help people understand, but it seems like the show tried to make it seem like they are a part of the actual police force. According to Huss (2014), part of the public’s misconception regarding forensic psychology stems from a lack of awareness about the very origin of the word forensic itself (p.3). The concepts that the show attempts to use is never clear. In fact, the only word that Dr. Wong continues to use other than some random terminology is the word “profiling”. According to Huss (2014), forensic psychology has a deep and extensive history that developed long before popular culture began to focus on it
