Spinelli writes, “And right there in the middle of it all, in the midst of this perfect season mania, was Stargirl, popping up whenever the ball went through the net, no matter which team scored, cheering everything and everybody” (52). The students at MAHS did not like how Stargirl cheered for the opposing team. They wanted the basketball game to be the same, nothing out of the ordinary. Stargirl is a non-conformist and does things at the games. She also helped an injured player on the other team at a different basketball game. She cares for everyone, and the students get very mad at her for this. Stargirl just wants to be kind and caring, but the students misunderstood her …show more content…
Spinelli writes, “This was when Anna Grisdale first noticed Stargirl. Through her own tears Anna could see that Stargirl was crying also. She wondered if Stargirl had been at the church as well. Even more, she wondered why Stargirl was there at all” (45). Anna had lost her grandfather. She was surprised to find Stargirl in her house during the reception. Furthermore, Stargirl was crying and sharing her grief with the family. She didn't even know the grandfather. Anna’s mom noticed Stargirl and yelled at her. Stargirl did not answer her. Stargirl ended up getting kicked out of the house because they thought she was joking and was being rude. Stargirl just wanted to share the grief with Anna’s family and was misunderstood yet again. She was rude to Stargirl when she just wanted to show that she cared for the family and their
The novel Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli shows how being yourself can be good for you, but not always for the people around you. John F. Kennedy’s famous quote, “Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth,” relates to the novel, since it relates to the theme. Stargirl is a prime example of this quote. She was shunned by the student body for not conforming to the MAHS norms and being forced to act differently to be the same as everyone else to blend in with others. The first example of the theme in this novel is that Stargirl dresses differently than the people around her.
In the book Stargirl by: Jerry Spinelli, a girl named Stargirl comes into her first day of 10th grade at MAHS in Phoenix, Arizona. It is her first year in a public school because she used to get homeschooled. On the second day of school Stargirl meets Hillari Kimple. Hillari is the popular girl who now thinks that Stargirl is a scam being perpetrated against Student Body with government. When people say why would you think that she says to increase school spirit.
Although, her name does suit her in some ways, because as much as she is fierce and simple-minded, she is also loyal and kind to the people she cares about. Sadie can be determined to save a friend no matter what. Despite her attempt to be aloof, she cares about everyone around her deeply and constantly wishes
This probably created a big target on her back from supporters of the government and perhaps jealous members of the AIM group. It wouldn’t have been out of the norm for resentful members to try to take attention off of a popular person, in this instance it’s Anna Aquash. They might have even planned to “take care” of Anna. However, in many situation like this the issues run deep and internally, which leads to cover ups. Perhaps even people getting paid off to keep quiet, and maybe even threatened to be killed if they spoke
There’s something in Stargirl that makes her unique, but it 's very strange. Stargirl is very different than the other people that i know. Every day she plays the Ukulele and sings. Then she comes to school with a mouse in her backpack.
She also hates the cheerleaders for no apparent reason. She believes even the tiniest calf has a bigger brain than them. I thinks she’s a great best friend to Olivia, but she really doesnt think about other people's feelings. She’s just concerned with
If you don’t know who Stargirl is, then she’s an abnormal girl who is going to a public high school from homeschooling, The only thing that was keeping Stargirl for dying in a public high school is because she did one thing that changed the high school basketball team. There are many reason why Stargirl is a unique person in the public high school. The first reason is that she has a pet rat named cinnamon, and she cheers for the other team during high school games.
In Stargirl, by Jerry Spinelli, Stargirl, a new student at Mica High, mixes up the lives of all the students and teachers. Her popularity skyrockets, and she ends up friends with almost everyone in the school. Suddenly, her popularity drops rapidly. Hillari, the most popular girl at school, influenced all the students, except one, to dislike Stargirl. The only friends she has left are Leo and Cinnamon, her pet rat.
The relationship between Stargirl and Leo, the two protagonists, is greatly affected by this struggle. Leo values conformity, while Stargirl expresses her individuality. The conflict develops to where Stargirl attempts to act like everyone else does to save their relationship. The character she creates to act as a conformist, Susan, is average in virtually every way. Conformity plays a major role in the development of the book, and eventually leads to the end of Stargirl and Leo’s
In Stargirl, by Jerry Spinelli, the protagonist, Leo Borlock’s experiences cause him to change throughout the novel. In his first experience, Leo meets Stargirl—or at least everyone keeps talking about her when she arrives at school. She’s quirky and eccentric and has everyone wondering who she is. Leo and his friend Kevin agree at first to put her on “Hot Seat”, a show they run together where they interview students from their school. However, the next day, popular girl Hillari Kimble is telling everyone that Stargirl is a fake, planted to encourage and excite the students.
I would recommend this book to anyone. Even adults would enjoy Stargirl, as it could teach them a lot of lessons as well. This is actually one of the most meaningful and truthful books I’ve ever read, and I would very much recommend it to anyone who is struggling to find their identity or struggling with self-worth. It was truly and amazing book and it has hugely impacted my
Her brother and sister always did the wrong thing but didn’t get yelled at and she noticed that. When she did something wrong her dad would spank her multiple times but he didn’t let his other kids find out about it or they just couldn’t ask why he does it. Every time she had to go by her dad’s house she told her mother to lie to him and say she was either sick or just didn’t want to go. She was scared of her dad because she never knew if he would go farther than spanking her with a belt. A few months later he was arrested and Anna and her siblings never went to visit him because their mother didn’t allow it.
Although we can understand that Anna was upset in the Chekhov versions of the story, as she cries to Gurov thinking about how they may never be, and how she views herself as
The cheerleaders even invite her to join the cheerleading squad. The first time they ask Stargirl says no but the second time she joins the team. During the first basketball game-red rock- Stargirl comes to cheer, but to the other cheerleaders surprise she cheers for the other team! At first it didn’t bother them much because they were to wound up thinking
(Spinelli 26) Stargirl is unlike anyone at the High School, meaning that the students are not used to the way she acts. They were uncomfortable with her, but her originality made her special. On the other hand, Stargirl’s transformation positively influenced her relationship with Leo and the other students at Mica Area High School.
