Julee Pettis First-Gen Warrior Scholarship First-Generation Student I am the first in my family to be attending college. My parents inspired me to further my education and to have a successful career. Being a first-generation student has inspired me to set goals, and volunteer in the community. My area of study is in nursing because my goal is to be a nurse practitioner. Being a nurse requires having outstanding abilities in math and science. Nurses are logical thinkers and they have wonderful …show more content…
I organized a bone marrow registry drive because I wanted to help those who have been affected by cancer. Being a cancer survivor motivated me to make a difference. When I was 16 years old, I went to a doctor appointment that changed my life forever because I was diagnosed with stage four Hodgkin's Lymphoma. My doctor advised me to get a bone marrow biopsy and PET scan done. As a result, the cancer had spread to my lungs, neck, spleen, and stomach. Fortunately, the cancer did not spread to my bone marrow; however, not everybody is as lucky. After chemotherapy, 28 radiations, and six surgeries, I was finally cancer-free. Fortunately, I have been cancer-free for almost three years. As a result of the bone marrow registry drive, 31 people volunteered to have their names put on the bone marrow registry. This event changed the lives of people who need a bone marrow …show more content…
It impacts the community because it encourages people to help those in need. Also in 2016, I was an Honorary Chairman for the Relay for Life event of Osseo, Wisconsin. I helped to plan the event and wrote a speech about my battle with cancer. My speech inspired the community to donate to the American Cancer Society. I inspired cancer patients to continue their battle against cancer and have courage along the way. I also honored those who have died from cancer. During my high school career, I was a Third-Year Member in the National Honor Society. Every year, I participated in the 3rd Grade Problem Solving event that teaches third graders leadership and team building skills. Also during my time in high school, I was the Special Events Coordinator for the Future Business Leaders of America. In 2016, I went to the National Fall Leadership Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I also have participated in the Splash Against Cancer event to raise money for the American Cancer Society. All of these experiences have taught me that it is important to help
As a student, I passionately feel that your college experience is what you make of it. I wanted to make my experience one consisting of philanthropy, scholarship, and leadership. As of 2016, I am an event chair, for Relay for Life. Relay for Life is one of the American Cancer society’s largest fundraisers, al over the nation. I chose to undertake this role to honor all of who have touched my heart, as well as everyone who has battled cancer.
All donations gathered from the weeks leading up to the Terry Fox run by volunteers were directly given to the Terry Fox foundation, where 84 cents of every dollar goes toward funding cancer research. Over 700 000 000 $ worldwide has so far been raised, and every bit was helpful. So far there has been no cure for cancer, so this fight against cancer will continue even after these runs. It is a long road to take, but nonetheless a worthy one to follow.
Ultimately, activities with the same orientation have inspired me to make a positive impact on my community in the future. Operation Santa has been a teaching tool towards the important ideal I learned at a young age, "Help others even though they may not be able to help you." Moreover, interacting with individuals who are not as fortunate as I am has humbled and motivated me to become the best person I can be in order to help other hapless members of my community. I believe this project is one of the most rewarding activities any volunteer can participate in. Reaching out to families that endure a
I organized multiple clothing, food, and book drives. While I was a Girl Scout, I earned my Bronze and Silver award: the second and third highest awards a Girl Scout can earn. Some other examples of events that I’ve planned to give back to my community are cheer clinics, movie nights, and 8th grade prom. I also have gift wrapped at the KMCC during the holiday season, tutored students at the Intermediate School, volunteered at the Ramstein Bazaar, picked up trash around the base, and bagged groceries at the commissary multiple times. Taking action in the community is important to me because I like to make positive impacts that benefit the lives of
It made me feel great to know that I was volunteering for an organization that not only promotes fitness and fun but donates 100% of what they make to cancer research.
Of my many volunteer and paid extra-curricular activities, the most important to me is the National Art Honor Society, which extends artistic activities to my community. We organize two school events: the Festival of Trees and the Talent Competition. The Festival of Trees is an event when every school club can choose to donate and decorate a tree that we set up. All of the money raised goes to an organization of our choice. For the last 4 years, we have donated to Street Grace, which benefits the fight against human trafficking, especially in the Metro Atlanta area.
I have helped the community by going to a pink Vail event this year during March ski season. It was to support the ones who had/have breast cancer that was hosted by the "Shaw regional cancer center" in the Vail valley medical center in the mountains. This foundation is for skiing and snowborders all around the world that participate and try to raise money for the woman in need. During the pink Vail you dress up in your pink gear and team shirts depending on who your supporting and you go out and ski to different stations trying to fill up a peice of card with stamps. Then later throughout the end they have chanllegnes and a concert where theres many doctors there getting asked questions and what happens while you have cancer.
I helped my community by organizing and managing my church's blessing box since it supplies my community food and other resources to people that are as not as fortunate. Finally, I helped my community by assisting with the Reading High School Alumni Yearly Banquet since it allowed the alumni to improve the core health of the community since they play a major part in my community in various ways. I also plan to do more community service to assist all of the different communities I am a part of, doing this will also help me
We planned events, raised money for charities, completed innumerable community service hours, and built a respect for our organization in the
I wanted to make something happen that had a more important meaning. Making crafts and helping with my friend’s fair animals was great and I will always love those memories; however, I wanted to make a change. After doing a 4-H project on my family history, I realized that too many people in my life have been taken from me because of one disease: cancer. I knew right away that other people want to make a difference and find a cure to cancer too. This is when I realized I wanted to take all the skills I gained through 4-H and lead my peers in a team through the American Cancer Society Relay for
Throughout high school I have participated in many different activities and programs, but one of the opportunities I was given I will carry with me forever. As a junior at River Valley I participated in the Marion General Teen Volunteer Program. After interviewing and being placed in the physical therapy unit I took the opportunity to branch out into other areas of the hospital. I soon made my way to the labor and delivery floor where everyday a miracle happened. My duties while volunteering included assisting the nurses during hearing checks, changing diapers, and rocking crying infants in special care.
Going out for sports, making new friends, working hard on homework, and just doing everyday tasks for the person I am today, is working towards my future. Taking CNA classes and becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant has been just one significant choice amongst others that I view as a supporter for my
I was able to learn how to balance work with school and still managed to keep my grades up; this was a great accomplishment for me. My moms determination to provide for us and give us a better life made me want to strive high. With this determination I would like to pursue a major in business. This area interests me due to its broad opportunities in the workforce.
This event showed me the joy of volunteering and established a love within me that still has not died. These two factors are why I will never forget this event, and why it inspires me to
This scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for students of GVSU, and I am honored to be considered for this scholarship. I believe that I am a great applicant for this scholarship, and that I deserve this scholarship. One reason I deserve this scholarship is because of my strong academic courses. Throughout my high school career, I pushed myself academically by taking a total of 10 AP classes and 7 honors classes. These classes were all challenging, yet I pushed through with determination to complete the classes to the best of my ability.
