She tries to keep up a strong outside nevertheless it’s hard since, “...this is the first time I’ve ever seen anyone under that toughness- in anybody.” (Crutcher 179). After the long, never ending days of feeling left out and, someone like Sarah can feel very unsure about themselves. Even if an outsider couldn’t tell that they were bullied, the victim will always have those mean thoughts in the back of their head. Sarah tried to keep up a facade for so long that it wore down what self-confidence she had. The months and years of trying to hide under a disguise is the way many victims deal with their sadness. Once Sarah looked back and started to remember what she went through, she tried to take a break so she wouldn’t hurt again. By harsh words and the struggle to keep up an unrealistic facade, the victim of bullying can easily think that the terrible things said about them are
It was the summer after eighth grade, a year of pretty terrible bullying at a brand new school. I had just lost touch with my best friends-- the kids I’d known since Kindergarten-- and once I became a target, I was blacklisted and was abandoned by the new friends I’d made. My parents didn’t know I was bullied or that I was struggling with very severe depression and anxiety and, honestly, they didn’t try very hard to figure out what was going on. Much like Melinda’s parents, they responded with anger, frustration, and a deficiency of compassion. So I struggled; I was hurting and alone with nobody to talk to.

Melba knew that what they did hurt her emotional and physical but she played it off and stayed positive. Melba was bullied but with violence and hurtful words. So did I.
This only makes her recovery process harder and longer. Brown wants to show her readers the perspective of a bully-victim, that bullying is not a joke, and that it can lead to serious
But, as it turns out, she is telling the truth, and this just sickens me “‘You’re lying, you don’t remember’ cried the children” (2). That quote was spoken by the children in class as she told of the poem she wrote, and told them how great it was. But nobody believed her, so they immediately assumed she was lying and tossed her into the closet. They did not know the whole story because they were blindsided by their hatred and jealousy. Unfortunately, though, bullies do similar things in the real world, and they, too, don’t see the whole picture, similar to William, one of the classmates who lead the mob of bullying
