In our mini-lab yesterday, we put sugar cubes in a jar and shook them for three minutes. The first jar had one cube, the second had two cubes, and the third had three cubes. We were trying to find the impact of the shaking on the sugar cubes. Our sugar cubes represented the rocks, and the shaking was an outside force. My group’s hypothesis was that the sugar cubes would break up. The mass of one sugar cube was originally 2.35 grams. After it was shaken by all three of us for three minutes, it’s mass was .96 grams. Our data cannot be used for everyone, however. How rapidly, strong, and fast you shake can make a difference.
However, the perceived shaking of the Haiti earthquake is said to be “extreme”, which is four tiers above Haida Gwaii’s perceived shaking level (strong). Comparison 2: Human and environmental impacts Due to many factors that provide a variety of influences that
Mika Nijhawan 9/29- 10/10 2 MENTOS AND SODA LAB REPORT State the Problem Does the type of soda affect the size of the explosion, after mentos are added? Develop a Hypothesis If seven mentos to a 2L bottle of Diet Pepsi, then it will create the biggest geyser out of Coke, Fanta, & Root Beer because Diet Pepsi has potassium benzoate, aspartame, and the carbonation which react to mentos. Design an Experiment Materials List: 1 clear test tube 35 original flavored Mentos candies (2 1/2 rolls) 1 3x5 index card 4 2L bottles of soda (all different flavors/types) 1 2L bottle of soda water 1 100 mL graduated cylinder 1 400 mL beaker 1 pair of tweezers (preferably large) 1 small container Procedure: Stack seven mentos in the test tube When given permission take the test tube, soda bottles, index cards, and the remaining 25 mentos, to the designated area Place one of the four soda bottles on a flat area Open the soda bottle and place the 3x5 index card over it With the index card over the soda bottle, flip the test tube over and place it on the index card, so the test tube is lined with
To calculate the experimental mass the substance of each bag and the bag its self was measured using a balance. After gathering the mass subtract the mass of the empty bag to the mass of the unknown substance, in order to just have the mass of the substance. Afterward the mass of the unknown substance was divided by the number of moles recorded on the bag of the substance. The measurements are displayed on the table
“If you pump water in a fault, the fault can slip, causing an earthquake.” https://stateimpact.npr.org/texas/tag/earthquake/ These earthquakes, no matter how big or small are bothersome to a person 's
The book Sugar Changed the World gives the reader a very informational tone throughout the events occurring in the story. The author's perspective and purpose for writing Sugar Changed the World is to tell a story of how sugar impacted the world negatively and positively, and they respond to conflicting viewpoints by addressing the facts and proving the historians wrong. The writer informs the reader about the positive impact of sugar and how it changed the world because in the book it said "The end of slavery was a great step for human rights”. “On August 1, 1838 all slaves would be free” (pg 104).
This means that, it has 30 of the little sugar packets in it. Also, so many people would think it only has a few grams of sugar, but it doesn’t, not even
The quivering began to intensify, causing belongings to fall in residents’ homes. It was the beginning of the 5.7-magnitude Oklahoma earthquake, which struck on November 6, 2011 and resulted in significant structural damage (“Oklahoma’s Largest Quake in Decades Buckles Highway; Rattles Residents,” CNN). A journalistic study—published in the journal Geology—conducted in 2013 showed that the 2011 earthquake was actually caused by fracking, a practice in which water is injected into the Earth’s ground (“Wastewater Injection
The passing of the Sugar Act further intensified the growing resentment between the colonies and England. George Grenville, the Prime Minister of England, passed the Sugar Act in 1764.This act taxed all of America’s imports. He also more strictly enforced the trade laws. The Americans deeply resented the taxation that they felt was unjust. James Otis put the general mood of the colonists into words when he said each colonist had the right to be “free from all taxes but what he consents to in person, or by his
The other time where mass could have been lost was during reaction 3, more specifically each time the liquid was decanted. Although a few black sand-coffee grains of the copper (II) oxide lost do not seem like a significant amount, they do have an impact on the final result, and each time a few of the grains were accidentally decanted could have an impact on why our final recovered mass was less than the initial amount that we began
Sometime, in a transform boundary, the plates get jammed and pressure builds underneath the plates. Depending on the amount of pressure it can cause a huge earthquake. Earthquakes not only shake the ground but can also create cracks in the ground called faults. A machine that measures the intensity of an earthquake is called a seismograph. Scientists use this machine to predict how strong an earthquake is and then classify it on the Richter Scale (Figure 2
An unbalanced force can make an object speed up, if still, slow down, if in motion, or stop the object altogether. For example, when you throw a football through the air, the only reason it eventually slows down is that of the small amount of force that the football encounters while flying through the air from the air molecules. Another
Millie Newton Miss Amiat 22 February 2018 Plate Tectonics definition of plate tectonics Plate tectonics is the study of the structure of the earths crust & mantle with reference to the theory that the earths lithosphere is divided into large rigid blocks that are floating on semi fluid rock and are thus able to interact with each other at their boundaries and to the associated theories of continental drift and sea floor spreading. There are a few handfuls of major plates and dozens of minor plates. Seven of the major plates are named for the continents, such as African, Antarctic, North American, Eurasian, Indo Australian , Pacific and South American. Plate Tectonics explains why earth quakes and volcanoes are concentrated on specific

Earthquakes are caused when rock underground suddenly breaks along a fault. This sudden release of energy causes the seismic waves that make the ground shake. When two plates are rubbing against each other, they stick a little. Most earthquakes occur along the edge of the oceanic and continental plates. Due to stress they shift and cause the earthquake.
