Research suggests that over 40,000 people commit suicide each year. Suicide was the tenth cause of death in the United States as of 2013. The most susceptible cause of suicide is depression from alcohol and substance abuse. When a person is drinking excessively or using substances their inhibitions are lowered and this can increase impulsive behavior. Over time the drugs and alcohol can change the brain chemicals which will cause depression. If a person does not commit suicide, they can die from excessive drinking or drugging. The National Violent Death Reporting System stated that in 2007 one-third of suicides in the United States were due to alcohol consumption. 62% of these people had a blood alcohol content of 0.08.
