The movie “Lincoln” shows the last 3 months of Lincoln’s presidency and how he was attempting to end the civil war. Overall the movie was historically accurate but was in some ways exaggerated some scenes for example the passing of the 13th amendment and other scenes.
Lincoln's plan was to pass the 13th amendment to give equal rights to whites and blacks and abolish slavery in order to end the civil war. One of the reasons is was important to accomplish the 13th amendment was because the Emancipation Proclamation did not quite free all the slaves as they wanted to or could. Another reason Lincoln wanted to pass it was because he believed that abolishing slavery was the correct decision for society and would help conclude the civil war in 1865.

In the movie it showed Stevens coming home after they pass the 13th amendment and him getting in bed with Lydia. In reality Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Hamilton Smith were known for having a close relationship and living together. They lived together in Washington D.C and remained in a relationship for 24 years until Stevens died in 1868. After his death he had left her with $5,000 of his will which she used to buy his property. A couple of years later she died on valentine day in 1884.
The second accuracy in the movie about Thaddeus Stevens was that he really wore a wig on top of his head which was bald. In a scene it shows when he gets home and actually takes off his wig and gets in bed with his housekeeper Lydia. The reason he had to wear wigs was because in the 1820’s he contracted a disease which caused him to use wigs for the rest of his life.
The last accuracy about Thaddeus Stevens was the fact that he was truly for passing the 13th amendment as President Lincoln was. He believed that the right thing to do was to finally abolish slavery throughout the United States at the time while the Civil War. He was part of the republican party and was one out of many congressmen that voted in favor of the amendment to make it

Lincoln’s actual relationship was the same way as it seemed in the movie making this an accurate scene. Lincoln really loved Tad but did not have such a close relationship with his other son Robert as he had with Tad. Lincoln began to be closer to his son Tad after his son “Willie” passed away from typhoid fever. One main reason for Robert not being close to his father Lincoln could of been because when Robert was a child Lincoln went away for a while and wasn’t really as present as he was in Tad’s
Team of Rivals is a book written by Doris Kearns Goodwin, a renowned American historian. Her book is more than a biography about Lincoln; as suggested by the title, the book is also about the combined efforts of the members of Abraham Lincoln’s Cabinet from 1861 to 1865. The book follows the Secretary of State, William H. Seward, the Secretary of the Treasury, Salmon P. Chase, and the Attorney General, Edward Bates. The book focuses on Lincoln’s life, both public and private.
Introduction Thaddeus Stevens was a member of Congress and a Radical Republican. He was a strong abolitionist, working to pass an anti-slavery law during the Civil War. Thaddeus Stevens and other abolitionists began drafting the Thirteenth Amendment in December of 1863. Thaddeus Stevens earned the nickname “Dictator” when he was trying to move certain bills through the house within half a minute. Thaddeus Stevens grew to dislike the southern states because the Confederacy supported slavery so strongly.
Timothy Webster Timothy Webster is one of the most famous spies in the Civil War. He worked for Allan Pinkerton, the leader of one of the most famous detective agencies ever, and was the first spy to be executed during the Civil War. One of his major successes, and the reason he has been remembered so well, was the prevention of Abraham Lincoln’s pre inauguration assassination. No one knows what would have happened if Webster had failed, but if there had been a different result regarding the assassination then the country we now live in could be a very dark and miserable place.
However, a small radical group with old grievances against the US attacked Stevens for his heroic role in the Libyan Revolution, and that could not have been foreseen. This small group was
Recent hopes in the Union have been dropped because Abraham Lincoln’s reelection is very unlikely. His loss would mean the end of the war, and the Confederacy will officially be recognized as an independent country. After the Union captured Atlanta and blocked Mobile Bay, the Confederacy’s hopes of being an independent country where dropped and the Union’s hopes raised once again. With taking 55% popular vote and 212 to 21 elected votes over Democratic candidate, General George B. McClellan, Abraham Lincoln sadly won second term for being President of the USA. Many people thought that the reelection would mean the end of slavery and, they were right.
The North had beaten the South in the Civil War. The North won the war for many reasons; they had some advantages over the South, a great leader, and the desire to win. The North and South fought many battles before the Civil War ended. Each battle had a different outcome and some encouraging the fight and some ended in despair.
You can see this in Document B, wherein 1858 Lincoln says this: “I have no purpose . . . to interfere with the institution of slavery in the states where it exists . . .” Later on in the same document he also states, “There is no reason in the world why the negro is not entitled to all the natural rights . . . in the Declaration of Independence- the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” While Lincoln was running for president, he promised to leave slavery alone in the South, but he also stays true to his personal morals through his time, that slavery
In the beginning of the war, his motivation was founded in the “belief that the south had no right to secede” and to counteract the south’s decision they declared war. Although the purpose for the war had changed from solely correcting the south’s decision to fighting for equality and abolishing slavery, Lincoln “remained steadfastly true throughout the war to his basic objective[s]” of reuniting the Union as a whole and keeping the United States together as a united force. On January 1, 1863 Lincoln enacted the Emancipation Proclamation which set free all slaves held by force in the rebellious states. This spiked participation in the Union army which was an imperative part of the success of the north. Lincoln enacted this policy knowing it would increase the Union’s chances of winning the war to assist him in reaching his consistent goal of reuniting and rehabilitating the Union including the seceding southern states.
Lincoln was a very confidence and a thoughtful thinker. He really wanted the 13th amendment to pass to officially abolish slavery. But he had to express his morals in order to persuade the Republicans and other people who thought slavery was right. In the Lincoln Movie, he made moral arguments such as telling the story of Euclid, “if two things are equal to the same thing then the two things are equal - all people are equal.” This is a morally wrong argument.
It was now obvious that the war would only end when the South was completely demolished and when slavery was abolished. Lincoln did not want the Confederacy to be able to lose without being considerably harmed; he desired to take away slavery as a punishment for the South. Instead of being a war to preserve the union, the Civil War then turned into a total war to abolish
His intentions were not just freeing the slaves, he was more about bringing the country back together and joining everyone. President Abraham Lincoln was against slavery, but his main concern was winning the war and bringing the North and South together again. He once wrote: “If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it.” Lincoln first off wanted to save the country before slavery, but if he could save slavery with the country he would do it. He doesn't want a separate country but the slaves to be free, he wants the country to be saved before anything, and then they could work the slaves issue after.
Abraham Lincoln and Civil War America is a biography that tells the life and success of Abraham Lincoln. At the beginning it talks about his life and how rough he grew up. As Lincoln grew up he wanted to learn to read and write because he was ashamed that his father couldn 't. Lincoln learning to read and write was a key factor to help him win the election and become as successful as he was. Even as a young child Lincoln claims to naturally be anti-salvory ( page 281). This is important to his stand point during the war.
First, there were many interesting facts about this movie, but one important fact would be how the actors’ did an incredible job. You could see the excitement and hospitality in the actors eyes. It gives you important information from the past that you didn’t know.
Gabrielle Branco Mr. Egner Political Science 01/07/18 Movie Review: Lincoln At the time after his second inaugural address, President Abraham Lincoln fills the screen with his worries of the closure of the Civil War, his agenda of the abolition of slavery, and surprisingly for honest Abe, many acts and insinuations of corruption. Steven Spielberg directs this political drama in which Daniel Day-Lewis stars as President Lincoln himself. Lincoln proves to be a strong yet humble leader who has his goals laid out, and is ready to debate and support his arguments quite well. During the course of the movie, it is easy to see how many of the political changes of the time were so fiercely driven by Lincoln and his team.
Spielberg’s movie Lincoln was given many awards for portraying how President Abraham Lincoln emancipated slavery in the United States in order to end the Civil War. There was a reason that this movie was given so many awards. In the movie, Lincoln, who was played by Daniel Day-Lewis, did an excellent job of acting how Lincoln felt trying to get the 13th amendment passed. One of the strengths that this move possess is reality that this movie shows on everyone during Civil War. Although many people during the Civil War believed that slavery should be abolished, others were still having second thoughts on emancipating.
