Oil has been the saviour of many and gave them something to live for. Oil was discovered in Texas in 1901 on spindletop. The thick goopy substance called petroleum made many families and individuals richer than they would have ever believed. It made job opportunities for most everyone and caused big changes to the society and how people live. What are the biggest social changes caused by the discovery of oil? Three important social changes to Texas in the 1900s are the spin off jobs, building of universities, and the bringing together of communities. The universities made it easier for people to go to school and get an education. This was not very accessible to most people because of the distance and cost. The universities also caused there to be lots of cities nearby so there would be lots of people going to the colleges. This was not the most important social change because without the spin off jobs there would be a low amount of people going to the colleges. The college helped them to create a better future and more job opportunities but without the money from the spinoff jobs the colleges would have a lot less people. Along with changes within society, education experienced great changes as well. When World War I started, there was only about one million kids attending a high school. However, this number soared to over four million by 1926. With industry booming and the economy prospering, there was a need for higher skilled laborers. This is exactly what high schools became in the 1920’s, as they offered a big range of various courses for students who were interested in industrial jobs.

The 1920’s were a decade full of social structure, prohibition, and crime. All matters of life changed in the 1920’s starting with prohibition, this sparked a crime movement to illegally sell alcohol. This crime movement gave birth to a new influx of wealthy smugglers. New classes emerged into the system along with the lower, middle, and upper class came the new classes of old and new money.

Labor, social life, holidays, festivals, literature, and political decisions and actions in Texas was influenced by German immigrant culture in the 1830s when they immigrated to Texas. German culture was also influenced by Texas culture from the settlers that were already living in Texas. Both cultures assimilated together to form a German Texan culture. The German immigrants stuck to their political beliefs but also brought over new holidays, festivals, and literature that changed the life of many Texas in the German settlements. New literary ideas also sprouted when the German immigrants came over.
