The community of the City of Asbury Park is one of the poorest in the State of New Jersey. As of now, the City’s local economy does not fulfill or generate enough financial resources or opportunities for all of its residents to transcend or be uplifted from poverty. The consequences of not having comprehensible and consistent economic policies are the roots for dilapidated housing, crime, and unemployment. The cycle of poverty and dissolve of the middle class has weakened the community of Asbury Park, and it has trapped many individuals and harmed their upward mobility.

The excavation of the African Burial Ground was an exciting time for the advancement of research and discovery of new knowledge. Research teams everywhere tried to collaborate on the project to conduct their own research, some demoralizing to the deceased. The New York Metropolitan Forensic Anthropology Team (MFAT) was highly concerned with gaining data towards the development of racial identification, in the name of biological anthropology. Racing methods look solely at the physical differences between Europeans and Africans, putting people on a spectrum of physical superiority and legitimizing the institution of slavery. MFAT focused on the absence or presences of stereotypical traits of Africans such as extreme jaw prognathism, extended
According to the PBS Frontline video “Poor Kids” 2012, more than 46 million Americans are living beneath the poverty line. The United States alone has one of the highest rates of child poverty in the industrialized world. It is stated that 1 out of 5 children are living in poverty. The video documented the lives of three families who are faced with extreme hardships and are battling to survive a life of being poor. All three families have more than one child and could barely afford to pay their bills and purchase food for their household.
Bridges out of Poverty provided valuable insight on how to better understand the constructs of poverty, as well as offering strategies for how to help those living in poverty transition to middle class. The book was designed to help readers recognize and address issues contributing to poverty. There are many different hidden rules that exist within each socioeconomic class. Using the resources available in this book can help those living in poverty gain insight on what is trapping them in the poverty cycle. In addition, it can help those of us who are already living within the middle-class identify the reoccurring patterns of poverty and what we can do to assist in the development from poverty to middle-class.

While many theories of poverty exist, few focus on the overarching issues that exist to perpetuate poverty in the United States. Of them all, the Structural Theory of poverty addresses those issues most directly. This theory focuses on the overarching structural factors in society that dictate our lives and every decision. It is impossible to address poverty and combat this ever-pressing, and ever-growing issue without recognizing that society places people in situations that are out of their control. Similarly to the Cultural Theory of Poverty, which explains how belonging to a socio-economic class (specifically being in poverty) for generations produces a new family culture that is distinct from others.
The most important point I learned from reading chapter 21 is that solutions have to be made to help stop poverty, in order for students to succeed in school. Reformers say that poverty is just an excuse and that the students chose not to learn. Poverty exists because society neglects the root causes and blame schools. Poverty is not a school problem, but a social problem. Schools can help decrease poverty by motivating students to escape poverty, but society has to do a part too.

Poverty can be a vicious cycle for some families that goes from generation to generation. Another personal issue that can lead to poverty is illness and unemployment which puts someone out of work and there is little to no income coming in. Along with these personal issues that I stated there are also many
After much thought and research I have decided to focus of the psychosocial aspects of the poverty cycle. There seems to be many misconceptions on how and why people stay in poverty. The reasons are many – lack of education, disabilities of head of household or family members, substance abuse, poor job market, and yes, lack of motivation. The debate usually centers on what the obstacles are to stop the cycle of poverty. Frequently we hear the phrase “Just get a job!”, but often times it is not that easy, and the more obstacles in the way, the harder it seems to accomplish your goals.
The Combined Theory of Poverty believes that women, minorities, and people of color are disproportionately impacted by poverty because of societal factors. It is impossible to view our society in any light without recognizing this important fact. Gentrification, wage discrepancies, the lack of access to job training, and stigmas surrounding minorities, women, and people of color are some of the mine reasons why these groups face poverty the most. While the structural theory of poverty helps to influence this view of poverty, it does not explain how minorities, people of color, or women are able to succeed at all in life. Those who did succeed likely did it through sheer willpower and determination.
In 2009 the estimated number of impoverished families was more than 45 million, which is about 14.5 percent of the total U.S. population (Gongloff 2014). Majority of the poor Americans are white, but the poverty rate is much higher among minorities. Poverty can affect a child in many different ways. It can affect the whole child, the development of the child’s brain; it can also affect the child’s performance at school. Poverty can not only hinder a child, but it can also cause stress within the family.
