After all the readings, videos, and discussion about Appalachia, I'm honestly shocked about how oblivious I was to the hardships occurring to the people of these areas. Not to mention the resentment I feel towards the people causing these problems, particular the Massey Energy Corporation. The most impressionable for me was the documentary Overburden because it displayed the worst possible actions people can do to one another. The actions of Massey Energy were appalling. To place profits over people and their safety is despicable. They not only caused direct effects to the town of Raleigh County, WV, but they indirectly affected the people and the community by creating a divide and devastation. It’s unfortunate how sometimes change is only brought on by destruction; but it’s somewhat comforting to know that there are people willing to take action to fight against injustice as Betty Harrah. …show more content…
I’m eager to learn about the progress and research on environmental sustainability and excited to explore a piece of the beautiful Appalachia area. I have not had much experience with wilderness, seeing as I was raised in the suburbs of a swampland area, so I’m super pumped to be going on hikes and gardening outdoors with my group. Overall, I’m happy to be taking part on this experience that will not only teach me more about one of my interests, but will engage in some service and give back to a community in
This documentary No Mas Bebes was one of a kind, as history major and being Hispanic never heard of sterilization of poor Hispanic, blacks, or whites in the 70's. “If you speak English did you this way, if you don't speak English to each other way” (No Mas Bebed). These doctors were illegally sterilizing women making them sign during labor or right after labor, and handing them papers in English while they can only read in Spanish. I'm proud of these ladies that they went to the court system and try to get their voice out there. unfortunately and they did not win the court case
The article, What’s The Matter With Eastern Kentucky, by Annie Lowrey, eastern Kentucky is depicted as the hardest place to live in the country. In the article, she says that six of eastern Kentucky’s counties (Breathitt, Clay, Jackson, Lee, Leslie, and Magoffin) are ranked in the bottom ten counties in the country. These are coal counties and because of the recent political changes, coal counties have been povertized. The article mainly focuses on Clay County. There are many statistics about the downfall of the economy and the downfall of coal.
On July 11, 1990 a standoff began involving the Mohawk territories of Kanehsatake/Oka & Kahnawake. The intent was only to protect their pines and burial grounds from being disturbed and demolished in order to extend an existing golf course and ended in what is known as the “Oka Crisis”. What started off as an innocent barricade to ensure that the armed police force couldn’t trespass onto their lands, escaladed quickly when a shot was fired resulting in the death of an SQ Corporal. Watching the film brings out all sorts of emotions that I didn’t think I could feel simply by watching a documentary, it causes a person to go from angry to being on the brink of tears and back to angry in less than 60 seconds. Knowing that something so disturbing can take place in a more modern time
I figured that after all my traveling, a restful trip down the Snake River would do me good. During the ten mile rafting tour I plan on embracing the full scope of nature that Wyoming has to offer. Traveling along with a tour guide, I hope to learn about the environment surrounding the Teton’s. I expect to encounter plenty of wildlife including, birds of prey, water native critters like beavers, and game animals like moose and elk. The travel guide should also be able to educate me on the various plant life surrounding the Snake River.

As hard as it is to admit, the American justice system is flawed. The documentary Broken on All Sides explores some of the problems the American justice system has. Some of these problems include mass incarceration in America and racial injustice. This documentary begins with the discussion of the drug war which led to a massive increase of incarnated citizens in America following this was the discussion of the brutality and discrimination African Americans face when it comes to the American justice system. While still bouncing off those two main topics, the documentary begins to discuss about what life is like inside jails/prions and the problems former felons deal with once released from prison.

“The survivors of the Tulsa Race Massacre are nearly all dead now." (The history of the Tulsa race massacre that destroyed America’s wealthiest black neighborhood). The people that lived through this and are still alive are really trying to get this more known by people because if they don 't now, then sooner or later this time in history will be merely gone. If these actions would not have happened who knows what Tulsa would be like right now. There might still be segregation and racial separations.
Vance wrote a book about his life, a lot of it being influenced by his mother’s ations, which was seen with his health, mentally and physically, and his drop in education in high school. The lives of those in Evicted, are a result of family violence. Crystal Mayberry grew up in a family that did not care about her or her education and she dropped out of school. If she was to examine her ACEs she would have a multitude that led her to where she was in. Rural or Urban does not matter in the case of family violence and what it brings.
Lastly, collect information about animal, plants, and landscape, which we did. This adventure was once in a lifetime experience , and I had so much
The “13th” is a documentary about the American system of incarceration and the economic forces behind racism in America especially in people of color. One of the claims that the author mentioned is that today incarceration is an extension of slavery. It is also mentioned that most of the time in society we are defined by race. In the documentary, we can see how African Americans are sentenced for many years since they are too poor to pay their fines or sometimes most of these people plead guilty to get out of jail fast. However, African Americans are separated from their families and also treated inhumanly in prisons just because they are of a particular race.
In recent years, media growth has exploded in ways unforseen a generation ago. Since media continues to grow and reach every aspect of an individual’s life, be it through the news they receive or social media they follow, media’s influence on our society is largely present and seen everywhere. Being raised in US we are taught to act in different ways depending on the scenario. Often many behaviors and lessons are learned through experiencing everyday life . Sociology has become a way to understand and theorize how factors effect society and how usually it come to be. “Being Green at Ben and Jerry’s” Will’s use of analogy makes the essay interesting; it shows the reader how little the influence drilling would have on the ANWR. Will also makes excellent use of facts and statistics to persuade the reader that drilling in the ANWR would not be a bad thing. He also makes comments about environmentalists and their opinions, which makes the reader interested in his acknowledgment of his opposition, also making him a more credible source. In order to be more persuasive, Will needs to clearly state his position regarding the argument, as well as using more emotional appeal. Dear Representative, farming is by far the greatest industry in New Zealand.
That story shows us what happens in Chancellorsville. A lot of different things has
