The Canadian Pacific Railway was the final piece of the puzzle to finally bring Canada together as a country. The railway idea was introduced by Sir. John A. McDonald in 1871 to connect British Colombia to the eastern Canada. The completion of the railway saw Canada Unite into one country, rather than upper and lower Canada. Having a railway from eastern to western Canada was one of the largest and technologically impressive feats at the time (1885), and for many years after. The railway also brought many other positive things for the country such as more immigrants like the Chinese and Ukrainians to the country and it helped boost Canada’s economy tremendously. With the attractiveness of the railway to foreigners, CP built many tourist destinations …show more content…
Without the railway Canada would not have become more modernized in terms of how the country economy would improve. With the end of the Fur-Trade Canada needed more ways to improve its economy quickly, the completion of the railway allowed goods to be sent across the country much more quickly and efficiently. Gone were the days of having things carried by horseback, or having a canoe/boat carry things down waterways. The railway also allowed for many more goods to be carried at once, further increasing Canada’s exporting of goods to other countries. The railway further helped Canada’s economy by the large amounts of immigrants it would bring all over Canada. These immigrants would come to populate all the brewery’s, mills and farms that were popping up across Canada, as well as make their own businesses (Marianopolis College). The building of the railway boosted are economy a lot as well, it created thousands of jobs as well as bring in many Chinese workers that would eventually become future Canadians, and would make much of the population of the west coast metropolitan Vancouver area (Statistics Canada). After the railway was completed, many subsidiaries were made with the profit that was generated by CPR. Completed in 1869, the Transcontinental Railroad opened new doors for the United States. In order for this to happen though, some had to be closed. Our country was in desperate need on some of these changes, but some we could have lived without. This great connection of the coasts brought with it many positive and negative effects on the Native Americans, society, and the environment.
The building of the Canadian Pacific Railway was a very significant event in the development of Canada. It was important for the development of the West, which there was no easy way to get to. It benefitted the Canadian economy, allowing it to flourish and grow into what it has become today. Lastly, it allowed for unification of Canada as one whole country.
The West’s Influence on the Canadian Pacific Railway The Canadian Pacific Railway was first foremost a business, and like all businesses the main goal is economic success. In its rival and creation, the marvel of the steel rail was a lucrative plan by the East where politicians and investors got together to establish the first ever Canadian Railway. At the same time, America was a giant, and its commercial influence only grew with its transcontinental railroad that already started to get closer in control of the Western and Eastern provinces of Canada allowing Britain to slowly lose power unless it created a change. This idea of building a unified purpose was the reason that the Canadian Pacific Railway was created and lied solely on the
The cries of the voices of many Canadians following British Columbia joining Confederation on July 1st, 1871 made Prime Minister Macdonald’s promise come true in building the Canadian Pacific Railway. This railway would link Eastern Canada with Western Canada, thus, so connecting this nation together, finally creating a nation that was strong and united. The biggest problem the Canadian government would have to face was the many financial issues following the plan to build a railway. The years after British Columbia joined Confederation, Canada will struggle with a financial situation due to the poor planning and building of the railway that will set the government back financially, and the construction will harm Canada as a nation.
One of those being a railway, which was said to be put in within 10 years. BC joined confederation in 1871 and went on to have its debt wiped clean thanks to the Federal government.
It would be harder to get from place to place if there was never the Transcontinental Railroad, which surely would have influenced the ideas of other methods of transportation, like cars and planes. One of the most important points from Document F quotes: “Had it not been for these captains of industry, the free world might have lost the First World War and most certainly have lost the second.” They changed and protected the U.S. and the right of freedom with their work, and that’s

The year 1885 marked a momentous time in history for Canadians across the country. This year marked the end of the construction of the technological advancement for the transportation of goods and people, The Canadian Pacific Railway, known as the CPR. The CPR's impact provided a crucial infrastructure that facilitated Canada's economic growth for years and was originally built to “Physically connect Canadians coast to coast (Briggs, 2023)”. The railway exceeded expectations financially and virtually as it is still in use today and it is a staple in Canadian history for the development and settlement of Western Canada. Many other railway companies failed to achieve profitability and went out of business.
With the advent of the railroad, many of these issues disappeared. Railroads had a major impact on advancing the American economy, transforming America into a modern society, and improving an antiquated transportation system. The building of railroads created rapid economic growth in America. Railroad companies employed more than one million workers to build and maintain railroads. At the same time, coal, timber, and steel industries employed thousands of workers to provide the supplies necessary to build railroads (Chapter 12 Industrialization).
Business owners made lots of money from the railroads because they were able to transport goods farther and faster with ease. Although the railroads tremendously impacted businesses and therefore the economy, the native americans were negatively impacted because the railroads were being laid on “their” land. This caused distrust between the settlers and the natives because of the “disrespect” for the land. Because of the new ways of transportation, the industrial revolution took place causing skilled artisans to be replaced by unskilled workers that used large complex machines.
The C.P.R - the railway was the reason why Canada become one colony. Canada had to put aside their differences and become a colony so the British bank could give them money to build a railway. John A. Macdonald realized that population and wealth would increase if the railway was built because it made it easier to do things so he made it a priority. The railway ran through the west and was a major reason why the prairies developed how it did. After settlers came because of free land even more came because they found that the railway ran through their.
