The Importance Of Calorimetry

The Calorimeter
Calorimetry is the science that was first recognized by a Scottish physician and the scientist Joseph Black. It is related with determining the variation in energy of a system by measuring the heat transfer with the surrounding. It is derived from the word calor in Latin, which means the heat and the pressure. Calorimeter is the device used in the calorimetry science to measure the quantity of heat transported from or to an object. Heat is the transfer of thermal energy between two bodies that differs in temperature (Mc Graw Hill Education). Calorimeter helped many generations to measure the quantity of heat using different types of devices; also they followed a specific procedure and equations to find out quantitative …show more content…

Also, it has played an important part in biology. Antoine Lavoisier is the person who discovered calorimetric measurements on biology applications. Calorimeter is important in biological side because every creature is an energy processing system. Moreover, the analysis of energy in a biological system would give inclusive information about how living thing use energy for growing, reproducing and many different procedures. Every living thing is an open system which means that it should take in and give off operations as side of its normal processes and it is extremely hard to make exact heat –flow estimation on open system. In addition, the sizes of many creatures are not matched the size of calorimeters. However, a chemist can adjust the amount of a substance by using calorimeter but a biologist often cannot adjust the amount of a …show more content…

There are many kind of calorimeter that can use to measure different things for different purposes, one of them known as a coffee cup calorimeter. Coffee cup calorimeters are often used to measure changes in solution. Since the reaction is done in the calorimeter, the change in enthalpy is measured directly by the device.

• Types of Calorimeter
There are two types of calorimeter, the Bomb Calorimeter and the Coffee Cup Calorimeter.
1. The Bomb Calorimeter: For combustion reactions, we regularly encase all reactants in a dangerous confirmation steel holder, called the bomb whose volume does not change amid a reaction. The bomb is then submerged in water or other fluid that absorbs the heat of reaction. The heat capacitor of the bomb in addition to different things is then measured using the same method as different calorimeters. Such an instrument is known as a bomb calorimeter, and its application is known as the bomb calorimeter.

Since volume does not change, a bomb calorimeter measures the heat evolved under constant volume,
